music question

Does anybody know what Beethoven quartet (and which movement from it) the string quartet is actually practising during (which means: intercut with) the bank robbery?

reply

For anyone who's interested:

Op. 74, first movement.

is the great harp quartet, named so cause the persistent presence of " pizzicato " during the 2nd movement of the work.

Since there seem to be some knowledgeable Beethoven/Godard fans out there on IMDb, I thought I'd venture another question and see where it turns up ... anyone know what the quartet is practicing right about the 35 minute mark in the film? It's the interlude right before the shot in which guard rips Carmen's dress off while they're hiding out in Godard's beach house.

This passage (in which you see the quartet playing) is from the third movement of Beethovens quartet in A minor, op. 132.
It is called: "Molto adagio. Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in der lydischen Tonart." - which means about: "A convalescent's hymn of thanksgiving to God, in the Lydian mode".

Wonderful shot, by the way, with the two violinists, their bows crossing all the time within the frame like a ballet...
