Anyone remember the video game?

A freakin tough game. Released for the NES and I believe they also made a sequel.

reply

"Freakin' tough" is putting it mildly. And yeah, there was a sequel called "The Mafat Conspiracy," which was every bit as hard as the original. I'd like to see them remake those (or just make a new Golgo 13 title altogether) for a modern system like the PS3 or XBox 360.

reply

I remember it too, and that's why i clicked on this link. in fact i never heard of this cartoon but am interested in checking it out!

reply

There were a few "interactive comic books" released for the PS1 that supposedly had English text to them if you want to check them out. A Nintendo 64 title was announced but never released.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new game; it would certainly be interesting to see what they do with today's technology.

Probably my all-time NES favorite, next to Final Fantasy 1. Never was able to finish it though; never could get past some type of (snow?)beasties or other. I've always been curious how close I got to the end . . .

reply

Which one are you talking about, Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode or Golgo 13: The Mafat Conspiracy (aka Golgo 13: The Riddle of Icarus)?

While I think your liking of such an obscure and unconventional game would show some personality, I hope you mean its sequel. The first Golgo 13 is absolutely horrible and low quality, and I'm extremely forgiving (I think the Robin Hood game on the NES is okay).

I just ran across the Manga/Anime. I didn't know it existed.
I never beat Golgo 13. I'd make it to the clones in SMIRK? and die every time. Just couldn't get past it. That game used to drive me crazy.

Why settle for the lesser of two evils? Vote Cthulhu!

Namco (Namco Bandai now) made a Golgo 13 arcade game in 1999, but sadly, it was only released in Japan. It was a arcade shooter similar to Konami's Silent Scope series where, as Golgo 13, you had to take out targets quickly with a VERY small time limit (usually 10 seconds). In one stage, you had to assassinate a inmate at a prison through a revolving door.

If your intrigued to try it out it's knocking around on MAME emulator.
The first level is shooting a guy on a balcony whilst standing on the roof of a moving train... the first level!!

The reason I saw this movie was because I liked the game a lot. Unfortunately, I was a bit surprised when I saw this movie (pretty young at the time), and thought it was a bit too extreme/graphic for me.

And about the game, I think I got to the last level once, but I couldn't get past the maze level. I think I kept going around in circles, and because there's no save feature, I had to shut it down. I kept going round and round, and kept falling through this stupid trap door into some water. Over, and over again.

Yes it was a tough NES game, i think a new game would be far better. I saw the movie when i was 17 in 1998 and wow, it blew me away.

I haven't played this game before. I would love to play it for myself when it's eventually re-released on digital. ^_^

Yeeah it was a tough game but it was fun. I never got far on it and I was good at games. It reminded me of 007.

Golgo 13 for the NES (the first one) is indeed a tough game, with one of the toughest bosses you will ever fight against. I remember playing this game most of the night, getting close to the end then pausing it to get a few hours of sleep. When I woke up I decided to skip school that day and try to finish it. I believe you were given 52 continues or some weird number like that. I finally made it to the final boss, where you had to destroy a bunch of clone vats that kept producing clones, who in turn would take shots at you from all sides...while a timer was counting down. One of the most stressful experiences in any video game. I didn't beat it that day, but a few months later I figured out the pattern and got familiar enough with the clone room to finally beat it.

Also, it is the only NES game with an implied sex scene. You meet a girl (Cherry Grace?) and it shows a view of your hotel room window. You see her silhouette move towards you, the lights go out, then your energy meter fills up. Duke was even getting laid 8-bit style!

The sequel, Mafat Conspiracy, is good, but it doesn't have the charm the first one did.

reply

The Cherry Grace stuff was a shock to me & my friends growing up. We found it funny of Duke's energy being renewed as the lights dimmed. 😵

Overall I enjoyed this game a lot as a teenager. I'm not sure it'd be as good now or not. But I enjoyed it then and have picked up the Anime & Manga here and there over the years because of that game.

I had no idea the game was based on an existing property until I saw this in a "recommended" list on another board.

Back in the day a friend of a friend gave me this game after they grew frustrated by it. There was no box and no manual, so I went in blind. It was certainly different than the side-scroll shoot-em-ups I was used to. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who found it tough!
