The good old days...

When you smoke some weed with some friends, throw out a bunch of disjointed ideas, and come up with a batshit crazy movie.

I wish more people had the guts to make movies like this.

reply

I love this movie too.

reply

I was thinking of this movie the other day. Did you just recently watch this?

reply

It's pretty fun.

This review got me to look into it.

Just finished watching and yes, batshit crazy fits it perfectly.

reply

Never watched it but it’s on the to do list.

The Horror Show podcast did an episode years back that sold me on it.

reply

My daughter watched it with me and said it was more entertaining than the Halloween movie that is in theaters. I’m guess in the new Halloween can’t be that good. 😀

reply

After posting that last night, I found The Pit on Tubi and watched it……

And, I agree with your Daughter. The Pit is a ridiculous blast to watch. I had fun. The new Halloween was nowhere as enjoyable.

reply

She is correct.

reply

Yeah. Bad movies aren't as fun as they used to be.

reply

Generally just bad with zero charm.

reply

One problem is they TRY to be bad, which never works. Bad movies from the past are watchable because you can see the people who made them thought they were doing something brilliant. Intentionally trying to be incompetent isn't entertaining.

reply

The early 80s had plenty of quirky little films like this. A shame you don't really get films like this anymore.

reply

True. Anyone reading this, please recommend similar movies to this one--

I'd looked up similar films to The Pit, some which get recommended;
- Cathy's Curse (1977)
- The Gate (1987)
- Parents (1989)
- Mikey (1992)
- The Paper Boy (1994)
- Brainscan (1994)

Last night I watched The Pit (1981), Bloody Birthday (1981) and Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981). A scuzzy 1981 triple bill. I found Bloody Birthday to be quite similar to The Pit in several areas. Whilst Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker is peak early-80s WTF?

Different from The Pit, but strange gems of the 80s include. Blood Rage (1987), Pieces (1982), Blood Diner (1987) & Slugs (1988).

Great list. I've seen several. I'll check out the others.

I love how a kid who already has this living teddy bear that talks to him and encourages him to act like a sexual deviant, which is pretty incredible, goes on to find a pit full of man eating monsters. It's like they took two seperate horror movie scripts and mashed them into one.

I guess the original script had Jamie as a deranged kid who imagines a lot of these things, which makes a lot more sense.

reply

I never really thought about it that way, but yeah that sounds about right. Lol
