Mabel

I just found out that a local theater is doing a production of pirates of penzance, and I really want to try out for mabel. I can hit the notes just fine, but I am a little on the chubby side. Should I still try out, or do you think i should try out for another daughter? Do you think Mabel could be played by a chubby girl?

Like Linda Ronstand was so skinny. Go for it! It's such a damned hard part that I think they'd rather have someone who can sing it rather than someone who's skinny and can't sing. Even though you must be a soprano, maybe try for Ruth then instead. I think her part is way funner anyway.

Why would I want to move to Utah? I love booze, caffeine and monogamy! H.S.

It never hurts to try out for a part, and I don't think being chubby should be an issue at all.

One thing I will say, though, is that Linda Ronstadt's movie version of Mabel's song "Poor Wandering One" is in a significantly lower key than the original. Try to find a copy of the music in the original key, before you audition if possible.
