I thought the "Rex Smith & Linda Ronstadt" version was a Broadway Play in NY, but the movie version starred Kristy McNichol, NO? Please straighten this out!

Kristy McNichol starred in a perfectly awful movie called The Pirate Movie with Christopher Atkins. It was a "modernized" (1982) version, with some of the original G&S songs, but new ones too and some plot changes.

You're right about Rex and Linda, and with Kevin Kline and Angela Lansbury starred in (my opinion) the best movie version (1983). However, although I have it on video, I cannot find it on dvd. The only dvd out there seems to be the (1980) version with Kevin Kline and some chick other than Angela.

Yeah, but I didn't know that Rex & Linda had a movie version out, only a stage version,.....

My guess is that the "other chick" is Patricia Routledge. Estelle Parsons did the Broadway version, but I think they filmed it while it was still the Shakespeare in the Park production.

Since no one appears to have answered, yes, there was a live performance with all the same actors. It was liked so much, it was eventually made into a film with the same actors, which is far superior, imo, due to obviously the ability using cuts, takes and more elaborate sets and sound.

The only version on DVD right now is the live stage version, unfortunatly. Who knows if or when the film version will come to DVD.

With the exception of Ruth. Patricia Routledge played Ruth in the play and Angela Lansbury took over the role in the movie.
