is 'the phantom' (the makers rather) sadist in all versions or just this

i've seen the 1943 version, and if i recall right, he was a guy who had his music stolen from him, was mistreated by the theatre, and got his face destroyed. he stayed around like a ghost.
but in this version, the story seems alote diffrent. also, the "phantom of the opera" chops some guys hands off, has several people killed or death threaten. is a total control freak towards the girl, threatens to kill her, keeps her prisoner in the basement, and just seem like a.. "looney" would be an understatement.
am i right that there is this diffrence between versions? and who are you supose to root on? i don't think i like anybody in this movie.
the dialoge in the original 1920's version is "feast your eyes, glut your soul, on my accursed ugliness!"
this 1983 dialoge is "don't turn your head! look at me!", i mean, how screwed up is evolution?
jane seymor looked hotter in the wig she had that went over her forehead, too bad she didnt keep that look throughout the whole movie.

a guy said, aren't you gonna sing a song about the spring,
well, i don't know,
when the leaves starts to grow,
and the green gras starts to show,
the winter snow and cold ice melt,
in the air comes a warm soothing felt,
the grapes will be hanging on the vine,
its happening right there, in the springtime,
the birds are singing too,
in the clear sky of blue,
the sun burns on the gray pavement,
the days grow longer by the light that is sent,
up in the sky over the hill,
flies a witch to give little children chills,
and over at the barnyard, the chickens are shaking their feathers,
the air is not too hot, nor not too cold, in the springtime weather,
in the springtime, baby.

no, look man, just forget it, you hear,
maybe i'll sing about the spring next year.

The Phantom in Dario Argento's version is the worst. He rapes Christine.

Don't you lay a hand on my Sasquatch!
