Do females likes this movie more than males do?

Has anyone else ever noticed that this movie seems to be more popular with Girls and Women than with Boys and Men? This movie has more male characters than female characters in it and nobody would ever put this film in the same category as Twilight or similar films. Can anybody think of a reason for why this seems to be the case? Is it because this film stars several 80s heartthrobs?

The movie was good, however, I loved the book which I had read many years earlier. I saw it at the movies a life-time ago so I don't really remember if this was more of a chick flick or if there were also a lot of guys at the movie theater. I always liked movies that showed men bonding; it is nice to men in a softer light.

It was definitely female teachers/classmates who nudged me to read the book as a kid. There was a little bit of sisterhood in supporting Hinton.

Though the content didn't strike me as especially "girly". The character development was fine. Did seem like an overly romantic view of how boys fight. Lord of the Flies is classic because of how well it captured that part of boyhood.
