Why did Danforth have Fassett's wife killed?

Fassett sets up the whole project as a means of getting revenge on Danforth for killing his wife. The question is, why would Danforth have killed Fassett's wife to begin with?

She was a clerk in the CIA's Polish office. I think they said something like she was creating problems which I'm guessing means leaking Fassett's secrets to members of the Eastern Bloc. I havent read the book but that's what i gathered from the movie.

It's really not well enough explained, given how everything in the film turns on it. How many times do we have to watch her die in the film, after all?

Considering how pivotal this scene is to the movie it seems passing strange that the IMDB "verified complete" cast list contains no entry for Mrs. Fassett.

I believe she's there, Merete Van Kamp as Zuna Brickman. Van Kamp was the actress in bed with John Hurt; I didn't know her name was Zuna Brickman.

OK, I think I might be wrong. Danford did say something to the effect of giving the KGB one of their spies in return for one of their's so it was probably the KGB that killed her. What she did for the CIA or why Danford decided to sacrifice her is never really explained.
