pg rating?

i just got my copy of "one dark night" in the mail, and i have yet to watch it but the rating on the back of the case says pg.......whats up with that.....does anybody know why its not rated r for a horror movie?

reply

Well, there is no profanity or nudity and the violence is supernatural violence, and even within that, nobody is shown really being injured . . . No stabbing, nobody doing anything that malicious in the way of physical violence. It is a moody, atmosphere scary going with horror(primarily, but a little Sci-Fi)special effects.

PG was the rating when it was released.

I'm glad it was rated PG.

When I was a boy scout, the scout master had a 'movie of the week' get together. I recommended One Dark Night (keeping the giggling to myself). He basically said, "We don't do rated R movies, son."

And I said, "It's rated PG." Him: "Well, I'll have to screen it first..."

You have to understand I was dealing with very religious folk and their narrow-minded ways. Anyways, the scout master agreed with my recommendation (probably because he came up with an idea for preaching about peer pressure...*rolls eyes*).

So all us lil scouters watched One Dark Night. I was observing the boys' behaviors while watching the film...hyper, giggling, talking about getting scared...but following the story nonetheless.

Everyone shut the **** up when the **** started hitting the fan..........

*giggles*

"Beware, the children..."

No gore. No nudity. No cursing. Just what every horror movie fan is looking for.

There is nothing to warrant an 'R' rating but considering the MPAA in the 80's it's hard to imagine them watching it and not automatically tossing out an 'R'.

Don't let the PG rating deter you though. It's a good movie.

I remember this film was hyped in "Fangoria" and "Famous Monsters" while it was being created, with lots of production stills of the corpses. The director assured audiences that the film would be horrifying despite the PG rating. I remember the quote went something like "We've got no blood in the film, just pus."

I saw many movies at the drive in back in the day and this was one of them. IMO, this movie is better than some of the R rated horror movies I've seen. The creepy atmosphere was well done and it used suspense instead of buckets of fake blood to scare you.

I suspect people of this generation would find this movie boring because the majority of horror flicks today are gore fests. Guess the days of jump scares and real suspense are gone.

Mathias001, fully agree.

"Hey, shoot the zombie!"
"Where? I don't see one!"
"Oh wait, zombies don't exist, but your sister does resemble Keith Richards a little."

I like non gore movies , depending on mood or the quality .but I go for older movies these days. , what released these days is terrible .

Because there is no sex, minimal profanity. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was rated PG also. Your post shows how atmosphere alone outweighs eye candy.

reply

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (both versions and sequels) were rated R.

Right, I think YankeeDood was thinking about how Hooper tried to get a PG rating for Texas Chain Saw Massacre because there wasn't much in the way of blood 'n' guts. MPAA thought differently, though.
