Anyone feel this is the worst Bond film?

I like all Bond films. I don't think there is any "bombs" among the 23 official releases. That being said, Octopussy is the worst/least likeable of the series IMO. It is still decent, but I like it the least of the 23. Anyone feel this is the worst Bond film?

The Man With the Golden Gun and Quantum of Solace are the worst for me. They are the most unimaginative and dullest entries in the series. Octopussy has a kind of boring first half, but I enjoy the action sequences and stunts during the East Berlin/Circus/Train section. The scenes in Berlin are exciting, but I find the scenes in India to be a bit dull and too silly. The chase in the jungle and also the taxi chase are very poorly done, cheap, and awkwardly silly. The other problem with Octopussy is the plot is confusing, and I am not sure who the main villain really is. There are too villains (Orlov and Kamal Khan) and they have their own agendas, which makes everything confusing. Roger Moore is also very obnoxious and silly acting through out Octopussy, and he basically gives his worst performance in Octopussy.

I actually think A View To A Kill was an improvement over Octopussy. At least A View To A Kill had a clearer plot and a better performance from Roger Moore.

View to a Kill is below this one.

Its that man again!!

I agree, this has always been one of my biggest problems with this movie. On top of that, Jordan's Kamal is probably the most bland and forgettable Bond villain of all time IMO.

In addition, the movie also lacks the kind of memorable climactic battle that we typically expect to see between Bond and the main villain. Instead,
Orlov is shot while running from Russian troops, and Kamal dies while trying to regain control of his plane.

I agree with this as well - plus, AVTAK had a more memorable and colorful collection of characters, and also better music, including a kickass title song by Duran Duran.

This one is decent but should have been Moore's last. The movies were getting cliche and the writing was weaker from this one on until Casino Royale.

A View to a Kill is pretty bad and mostly a Goldfinger rehash.

Dalton's movies were not well written either and License to Kill is pretty cheesy. Too bad, with better dialog Dalton could have been a great Bond. He had the character from the books down pat.

How about worst TITLE for a bond movie? We all know what "pussy" is a slang euphamism for even if it technically means a house cat. Back in 1983 when the movie was new a childhood friend of mine and his father (I was at their house having dinner with them) disagreed on the title. His father (Steve) was very offended by the disgusting title while his son liked it, me I was neutral on it, it IS a clever play on words but nevertheless it is kind of sexually offensive.

reply

The title sounds more suitable for porno flick.

reply

Ha! I always thought that too.

As if the Bond film was called Octopus in reference to Spectre or something, and the cheesy porn-title equivalent was Octopussy.

Think Rambone, Whore of the Rings, and the Da Vinci Load! LMAO!

Actually, "A View to a Kill" rips off not one but TWO two films: "Goldfinger" and another film called "Gold" starring (wait for it...) Roger Moore and directed by Peter Hunt.

reply

Roger Moore himself, believed that at least among the ones that he did, A View to a Kill was the worst, so take that as you will.

reply

I agree 100%. This is by far the worst Bond ever. Many people think "The man with the golden gun" or "A view to a kill" or even "On her majesty's secret service". But to me those movies were far superior and definitely had a "Bond Feel" to them. This one did not..at all.

reply

I tend to agree with you. Whilst there are some individually good sequences in Octopussy, there is some terribly cheesy stuff:
* The clown suit
* The Gorilla Suit
* The crocodile mini - sub
* The Tarzan Call
* Octopussy's ladies' "assault" on Khan's HQ

By this time Bond was well and truly descending into the depths of self - parody. Roger Moore certainly had a debonair charm, but was also clearly becoming too old for the expectations of the part.

Things picked up for me when Timothy Dalton appeared on the scene.

Just to add to your list:

*"Sit-ta!"
*"It runs by hot air" "Oh, then you can."
*Every conceivable stereotype about India profiled in just under three minutes (sword swallower, nail bed dude, snake charmer, beggar, etc.)

reply

This is definitely one of the worst, Bond's distraction by all females is too juvenile even for Bond, the dialog is atrocious, the movie makes me cringe.

No. Quantum of Solace is by far the worst.

reply

Diamonds are Forever and Die Another Day are my least favorite. Also if Timothy Dalton would have starred in this film even with the same exact script it would have been miles better. I do love my Dalton :)

reply

QUANTUM OF SOLACE is my least favorite. I'd say OCTOPUSSY is probably my fourth favorite of the Moore Bonds, after LIVE AND LET DIE, and the underrated THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and A VIEW TO A KILL.

I'm with you. "Quantum of Solace" was horrible. I don't even consider it as a "Bond" film. I've always loved Moore as Bond.

"I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude!"

"Official" (EON-produced) Bond films that are worse than OCTOPUSSY:
MOONRAKER
A VIEW TO A KILL
DIE ANOTHER DAY
