I'm atually rather disappointd about this film. Anyone else?

Now I think this might have been Tarkovsky's last film. Its a slightly compelling piece of visual imagery, but certainly not even close to the images that were shown in 'Stalker' 'Andrei Rublev' and 'Mirror', 3 masterpieces of world cinema I feel.

But this....

I found to be ever so demanding and at times a really heavy watch a bit like 'Sacrifice'.

I mean I'm all for slow films with layered meaning but this really was pushing it too far.

But what a wonderful career and a great loss to world cinema.

Actually The Sacrifice was his last film.

This ranks with Andrei Rublev and Stalker as one of my favourite Tarkovsky films. I know he didn't have the same kind of access to finance as he did for his other films with this one, but I love it.

I'm disappointed but not terribly so as I am not that big of a fan of Tarkovsky. I might be much more disappointed if this were a Bergman film. I just don't see much point in filming 5 minutes straight on a guy holding a candle or sitting/lying on his bed with nothing going on. You can interpreted it with any artistic spin you want but it's just plain dull for most folks at the end of the day. Or maybe I'm completely wrong as my '4' vote is clearly in the minority.

For the record, I liked 'Stalker' a lot and it had a lot of very slow moving scenes but I thought it was appropriate for that film and what it was trying to achieve. Here, it just seemed like a waste of film and the audience's time.

I'm not "rather disappointed," I'm downright mad that almost an hour of my life was wasted on this mess of a movie before I finally gave up on it.

And since it was "movie night" at our house, and the night was still young, I put on "Wadjda." What a contrast. What a breath of fresh air after "Nostalghia." What better confirmation that "Nostalghia" deserves its obscurity.
