The candle - does that signify how art communicates?

There are several conversations about how the madman attempts to cross a bath carrying a lit candle. Later, he convinces the poet to do so himself, who succeeds, but dies. Is this supposed to represent the untranslatable nature of art, as discussed in the beginning of the film? Just my theory.
