Some powerful moments, but overall confusing

It had some very interesting dialogue and I loved the scene where Andrei talked with the little girl, but what was the point?
Was it a character study?
Did it have a philosophical meaning?
Were we just supposed to figure out whether he was crazy or not?
I'm really forgiving of Solaris, which I CLEARLY understand I have to watch twice, but I don't know about this one. I'm not sure a second viewing would give deeper insight.

It's always SPIRITUAL YOURNEY with Tarkovsky ( also Solaris) if you have no feeling with that and the search of the 'self'..you can't indeed understand a lot,but there are other more fitting directors for you then, plenty..

I loved Stalker and really liked Solaris as well. I thought this one was good too. Sometimes I enjoy a movie even though I don't fully understand it.

The title shows how to read the film. Andrei - a dying man - really misses his wife and family, and we see his memories of them throughout the film. The meeting with the man who loved his family so much that he locked them up to keep them safe shook him.

The meeting with the girl angel (Angela) was a lovely scene.

You're not the only one to have found the film confusing, many people I came across also said the same thing. This has led me to make a mini-series on my channel, in an attempt to clarify and interpret the film, so as to make it more accessible to other spectators. Have a look at Part 1 which is already out if you'd like:
