Urban Legend Basis for Terror in Topanga?

When I was little the babysitter told us a (supposedly true) similar story involving a woman, a car, and a crazed killer with a knife. In her version the woman comes home, drives into the garage but can't get the remote-operated garage door to close. She tries several times before a neighbor rescues her from the killer in her backseat who had been waiting for the privacy of the closed door.

Anyone else heard this told as an urban legend?

It sounds like just that, an urban legend. True events similar to the story may have happened. I found this in the IMDb trivia section of movie -

"The movie's four segments are supposedly all apparently based on "urban legends". The later film Urban Legend (1998), like the first "Terror in Topanga" segment of Nightmares (1983), similarly began with a killer hiding in the back seat of a car, which is an "urban legend".
