Guns

Did anyone else notice the bizarre mixture of firearms in this movie? The film is supposed to be set in either the late 19th century or the very early days of the 20th century (i think) so i was slightly taken aback by the mixture of Remington rifles, colt 45's, muskets and flintlock pistols used by Hayes crew and Ben Pease's men.

reply

yes it was ridiculous, for someone so keen on history, it was historically inaccurate and that ruins it.

The reason is that the New Zealand production crew could not get the proper weapons.

It was my opinion that the weapons used by the various crews, where just what they had available.. the newer guns would have been to expensive and rare in the pacific region to aquire.. they would have been stealing and picking up guns whenever available..

there is a good example. towards the start one of bully hayes' crew is using a scarf to strangle peases crew but when one of them drops a knife he picks it up and carrys on..

The German presence would suggest that it's the 1880s or 1890s, when German overseas expansion commenced. And the Spanish presence in the Philipines would suggest it cannot be later than 1898.

reply

That was my guess: 1880s~1890s.
