Who ripped off who?

I was watching this movie the other night and there is a scene involving a rope bridge over a cliff that is extremely similar to the end of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom -- right down to almost identical framing of certain shots. In checking the release date, I was surprised to see that this was released 6 months before Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and by the very same studio, Paramount. I can't believe that a studio would essentially "give away" the ending of its big tentpole summer movie 6 months before its release, but this seems too much to be a coincidence. Does anyone know anything about this?

Nate and hayes was made in 1983.. temple of doom in 1984

Thats weird. I saw the first 15 mins or so of this at a drive in sometime in 1984. It was the 2nd feature of a double bill...with Temple of Doom.

"Nate and hayes was made in 1983.. temple of doom in 1984"

Nate And Hayes was released in November of 1983; Temple Of Doom was released in May of 1984. That's just about six months apart. So they were in production at roughly the same time. Principal photography on Temple was April to August, 83.

I believe they both ripped off "The Perils of Nyoka" movie serial from 1942.

They both ripped this scene, from a great Shaw brothers movie, The lady hermit:

And don't forget the ropebridge scene at the end of The Man Who Would Be King.

As far as Indiana Jones and the temple of doom release date goes. I have the weirdest story. In late 1983 I came across a hand writen movie poster at a local theater in Victoria British Columbia. It said "Indiana Jones and the temple of doom" just written with a black highlighter pen.

I was really blown away because Raiders of the Lost Ark was such a big hit that I figured I would have atleast seen a comercial for this new movie. So I bought a ticket and watched the show. I loved it and went back a couple of times over then next few weeks and then the movie was gone from the theater. I never heard anything more about it and then suddenly in Mid 1984 the exact same movie came back with lots of fan fair and comercials all over the TV.

I have no clue how it happened, but I am 100% positive that I (and I'd assume many others in Victoria BC) saw an advance screening of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" 5 months before it was officially released.

Wow. Can anyone offer an explanation for this, because I'm really interested now...

reply

Hmmmm.
Was there a DeLorean parked outside the theatre?

reply

That would be the first time I ever hear of an advance screening *5* months before the movie is released.

Hell, I wouldn't even think final edits would be done by that time.
