Blu-ray?

Have anyone heard ANYTHING about a possible Blu-ray version of this great movie? in japan or usa or anywhere?

reply

I feel like the film is now officially 'lost' to the English speaking world. Pretty much anything that didn't make it to DVD has fallen into this camp. Having just watched the film, I think this would be a good one for Criterion to consider saving. Earlier this summer I watched another rescue project, WalkAbout. This film was out of print for a very long time, so at least Criterion seems more concerned about preserving important films than just putting out films that are already popular.

I don't know where one would make the suggestion.

Hi, I was also one who was happy to see Walkabout brought back to life by Criterion and I think Antarctica would make an excellent addition to their Blu-Ray library.

We hope so. Some day...

I sent an e-mail to criterion a year ago regarding this film and considering it for 'rescue', but heard nothing.

There is a japanese version on bluray - I just watched it. It does not have english subtitles, but you can find some that are more than passable on the various subtitle sites.

Frankly I was let down. I doubt Criterion will be interested, the made up parts where the dogs are on their own was hokey and overly anthropomorphized (like only eating terns which are much more difficult prey than penguins because the terns were 'bad guys').
