English version?

Does anyone know if there is an English language version of the original Antarctica (1983) that was produced in Japan? I would like my students to know thatEight Below was not original and based on someone else's story.
Thanks

I have friends in Japan, and so far there is no english version on "Antarctica" available on Japan on DVD.
You may find a VHS copy on some rent stores in U.S. or try amazon.com or ebay for a original copy (very expensive).
Unfortunately 8below is a Disney re-make, and of course everybody knows that Disney change original stories (pocahontas, mulan).

reply

yeah...cause disney is the ONLY one that alters old stories.

no one complains about the many changes of old stories to suit other cultures.

reply

No...the comment was that Disney alters stories.
Disney made Eight Below. They altered it.
If Lionsgate made Eight Below, then the comment would be that Lionsgate has been known to alter stories.

reply

What a dumb defensive comment. The original post was about Disney, not a specific culture. Disney is well-known for sanitizing stories because their target audience is children. Furthermore, they always rely on caricatures and cloying cuteness, again, because their target audience is children. Do you seriously disagree with that?

After seeing Eight Below, I wanted to see the original Japanese version. Didn't matter to me if it were in sub titles or not. I went on EBay and found the VHS version that had been dubbed in English. Either way it is more tragic than Eight Below.
I guess to answer your question, yes you can get it in English. Go on EBay and look under "Antarctica". There are a couple more VHS tapes available..

Eng-dubbed DVDs might indeed be bootlegs--thanks for the heads-up. :) So far the Hong Kong release is closest to the original--heck, it might in fact be the original, even tho' the spelling in the subtitles is...erratic.

Amazon.com has the video between $20 and $79, depending on the seller... and it's also in Ebay every so often.

Been looking for a copy of this for weeks now and e-bay has a well used version (1 only) @ $ 50 incl shipping.

What is an "HK" release and do you have a specific address or site where it can be purchased.

Saw "eight below" and was dissapointed with the remake after having seen the original several years ago.

Thanks for any info you can pass on

If you go on eBay UK you will see several sellers from Hong Kong who have this film for between GB £8.00 - £10.00 + postage and they all ship worldwide. Whilst the dialogue is in Japanese it has English & Cantonese sub-titles. I purchased one from Hong Kong myself and had no problems - it was brand new & sealed. One thing to note, all of their DVDs appear to be Region 3. So unless your DVD player is multi region, you will need to find a cheat code on the internet to make it play DVDs from any region.

Hope this helps.

If you go to www.subbiee.com and type in "Antarctica" you should find the English subtitles linked somewhere on the Net. The subs are for the full 140-minute version of the film, not the shorter foreign release on VHS. Make sure you get the "corrected" version of the subs, which is more accurate in tone, there is another version which is translated more "simply" (e.g. the dogs have 'friends' and not a 'pack').

I purchased a 2-DVD version of this move by "Fuji Television The Legend" in Japan this weekend. It doesn't have any English subtitles. However, after reading a number of postings on this subject that include the information that a Hong Kong version exists in which some of the dogs' names were translated to English (e.g. using Whitney for one of the dogs), it appears there is at least a third version out there as the version presently showing on Nippon Airlines features English subtitles that retain the original Japanese names for the dogs. The subtitles are well done, too.

Another Asian movie with a poor HW remake ?

Is there there any Hollywood remake that turned out better than the original ?

reply

I just got my original copy from hkdvdstore.com
WOW. 16x9 format, 3.1 dolby digital sound. Subtitles in japanese, chinese and english.
Run time 2 hours 20 minutes, my VHS copy was 1 hour 20 minutes. There are so much additional escenes about the dogs and the japanese expedition.
The menus are easy to navigate with vangelis score.
the DVD is NTCS format and region 1, so you can watch it on U.S. dvd players without problems.

Well, I bought it during business trip in Hong Kong so it's not English subtitle but DVD cover still have a brief English sypnosis.
