The State Line in this film?

I remember watching a film with my Dad years and years ago which we've been trying to remember the name of and I'm sure this is it.

I'm convinced Cash played a sheriff in the film and seem to remember that the whole murder trial seemed to hang on whether the killing had happened in one State or another?

Can anyone confirm if it's this film I'm thinking of?

reply

It probably is.

I don't remember if the trial hangs on whether the killing happened in one state or another, but Cash's character (Sheriff Potts) goes after the murderer because the murder happens in his area.

(May be a county line rather than a state line - it's been a while since I've seen the movie myself.)

Thanks WW.

It certainly seems like the one we're trying to track down.

Think I'll head off to Amazon for a purchase.

It was indeed a county line, not a state line.. i live only about 15 miles from where the murder actually occurred. Sheriff Potts was of Coweta county, but John Wallace was from Meriwether county.

reply

Right. The murder happened in Coweta County, after he was basically "kidnapped" from Meriwether County.

Actually he was kidnapped from Coweta County and killed when they were pushing him in the car and they disposed of his body in Meriwether County. I'm from Coweta county and I grew up listening to this story from my grandparents.

reply

Actually, no. He (Turner) was chased by Wallace and two men from Carroll County Jail (where Turner was arrested for stealing from Wallace- the offense occured in Meriwhether, he was just picked up in Carroll). The murder occurred in Coweta County. So, it actually was a three county occurence.

From one county to another in Georgia

The legal point was: Killed in Coweta -- it's a Coweta case, and Lamar Potts could investigate it and get it prosecuted. If there had been any way to successfully argue that the death happened in Meriwether County -- no such thing as convicting John Wallace in his own fiefdom.

In Georgia, Carroll County, where the kidnapping began, is north of Meriwether County where the body was dumped, but Coweta County is in between Carroll and Meriwether, and it was there that witnesses said they saw John Wallace deliver the fatal blow to the victim's head. The Coweta County sheriff made the arrest because the crime of murder had occurred in Coweta.

reply

The judge told the defense lawyer they had to prove where turner died. The burden of proof lies with the prosecution. They would need to show beyond a reasonable doubt the murder happened in Coweta. All they could prove was that an injury was inflicted in Coweta, and a body was disposed of illegally in Merriwether. It would have been up to the jury to decide if the burden of proof was met. This would have been grounds for an appeal. But Wallace did indeed convict himself of at least manslaughter with his story of shooting Turner by a so called accident.
