Terrible

Appart from the occasional funny bit this film was absolutly terible. I just attended a Phython tripple bill at my local cinema. This was shown last and many people left even before this film began. I can see why now.

Why were the Phythons alowed to film this awfull script. The thing that made Grail and Brian so fantastic was the main character holding the film together. Someone should have noticed that the script was rubish and made them write a better one

The Every Sperm is Sacred bit is hilarious. As is that vomiting guy. Even that one with the guys getting their legs stolen was pretty good. I also enjoy the songs like the before mentioned Sperm, the title song, the penis nickname song and the universe song are all pretty damn good.

Some bits are bad (and the Terry Gilliam short film on the pirate office crew before the main feature is terrible) or drag, but I think it's only a low percentage overall. I would never rank it alongside Brian or Grail, but it is still a good enough movie.

I love this movie! I think it's very funny!

I disagree. Unlike Grail and Brian, which occasionally you get the feeling they're having do scenes to move the plot along (which is futile, no Python film is going to suceed in the plot department) - scenes like the raid on Pilate's palace in Brian come to mind... having to drop in the cheap mosiac tile joke doesn't cut it.

In Meaning, I'd argue each scene stands by itself. Each one is beautifully shot, and perfectly performed. And, personally, I think the writing is on par, if not even better, than the other Python efforts.

Ant farms: cruel and barbaric, or not that bad really?

reply

I agree.

everyone gives this film such a bad rating cos ur so used to having visual candy and humor stuffed into you. if Life of Brian and Holy Grail didn't exist you would find this hilarious. It was extremely creative, orginial, and the cynical commentary and poking of fun at religion was genius. it is rich in sub-text and an excellent film. if you didn't like it, stick to movies like The Longest Yard and watch television programmes like The Simple Life. That would be more appropriate for you.

Now, now. People are entitled to not like this movie. The first time I watched it, I wasn't sure if I liked it. I didn't get it. I watched it again and saw the wit and humor. Now I think it is a scream and recommend it to my friends. It definately is not you cookie-cutter, premolded type of movie. I enjoy BECAUSE it is not like everything else out there.

Consequently, didn't it win the Cannes Film festival award the year it came out? I'm not expert movie critic, but it usually means something to me when others who are in a better position to judge recognize a film for its greatness.

The Meaning of Life is my favorite Monty Python film. Hands down. It's a lot different from everything else they've done and the songs and one-liners are great.

The fireman is very magical. If you rub on his helmet, he spits in your eye.

It wasn't my favorite, but I still liked it.

I remember seeing it when I was really little (well, not REALLY little, I was like, 7-8 or something) and the Mr. Creosote sketch scared me, hahaha. At the time I didn't know what it was, so when I saw it later in life, I was like "OHHH, THAT'S what that was...! Ew."

It's the only Python movie in which I didn't love every scene. The forementioned Mr. Creosote sketch, the liver donor...those kinda grossed me out, hahaha.

Find the Fish really amused me, though >_>;; It totally left me going "WTF, man. What the HELL was that?!", and I cracked up when they paid homage to it on Family Guy ^^;

I agree with talkjawking. Meaning of Life is the most original, witty, and cynical of the films. Holy Grail was boring at times!

You must have never seen Monty Pythons Flying Circus then?

reply

There is a documentary on the UK DVD of this movie. In it the Pythons talk about how/why/wherefor this film got made.

Eric Idle (if I remember rightly) tells a tale of how they took the idea to Universal (which apparently pissed off Handmade no end). They didn't even have a script but Universal commissioned it anyway.

Later on the studio head admitted that it was a "trophy signing". He didn't care too much what they delivered. He simply wanted to make the movie as he knew that with them on contract he could probably get every other comedian in the USA sign with Universal.

reply

Universal greenlighted this film on a stupid four-line poem that Eric Idle wrote. Universal didn't even care about a script. They just wanted some Python, and that's what they got. Some Python. Sure, it's a flawed work, but it's got some unforgettable moments.

reply

----Sure, it's a flawed work, but it's got some unforgettable moments----

:-) Exactly. Nothing to add to that really! Sorry.

Can I just say that this is the first time I've posted here.

reply

hahahaha. I get it. "No, i'm sorry, but we're out of time"

anyway, I didnt like Meaning of Life much when I first saw it, but recently I saw it again whilst stoned. It's different from conventional comedy, so I'm sure it won't appeal to everyone, but it might be my favorite Python movie. The protestants... so funny.

reply

A few parts were laugh out loud funny, but I more enjoyed it because it was surrealistic and sarcastic. I think it's a different sort of humor than flying circus, and the other films.

reply

I thought this was by far one of the best Python movies ever, it's brit comedy to the extreme! I thought it was absolutaly hands down halariouse

:D
i need to watch "and now for something completly different" again
but not including that movie ^
"the meaning of life" is the best :D

The Songs are hilarius. I love the Christmas in Heaven bit.

Overall though, id give it 6/10. The pirate office sequence seemed pointless, i didn't like the vomitting guy or the scene where they were taking the guys liver.

Not the best Python efort, in my opinion.

Oh Holy Cat! I am SO GLAD I did not watch further and get to THOSE parts!! Didn't like what I saw, it's just not my cup of tea have enjoyed other Python stuff. I DID like the E..S...I..S.. song/sketch.

reply

I thought the first half of this movie was pretty much brilliant but some of the second half just seemed really excessive and over the top, even for them. I could have done without the "Live Organs Transplant" and Mr. Creosote part, it was more gross than funny. The thing about Holy Grail is that very few things seemed to fail, if anything at all, and though the plot was loose, it wasn't all over the place like this film. Plus, I could have done without the whole "Find the fish" bit, that was just too odd for me. I still like this movie alot but Holy Grail is definitely the better film IMO. I still have yet to see Life of Brian too.

reply

i agree, this movie is basically just for a cheap laugh, it lacks the dimension of the other python movies

I've only seen it once, years ago, and I was not overly impressed. However I would like to see it again, since a lot of people like it.

this is my favorite Python film. the pirate short at the beginning is a painful 15 minutes but I love things about every sketch in this film. I mean really, what would you rather be doing then marching up and down the square?
