Anybody know if the quality is any good?

reply

I certainly hope so! I saw this when I was a kid and the 3D was amazing! When Dogen rips off that arm, it came at your face. Even simple shots where his car is driving along the desert, bits of rubble flew off the screen. I hope they preserved it.

dag. you saw this in the theaters in summer of 83.. how was the 3D? my friend saw it and said the 3D was out of this world.. not like the digital 3d we have today..

reply

I saw this in the the theater as well when I was 10. Absolutely loved it! I remember me and this other kid (can't remember his name) acted out over and over the arm ripping off scene at recess. There for a while in the early 80's several 3D flicks came out. I saw this one, Jaws 3D, Spacehunter, and one I think was called Jewel of the Third Crown or something like that, I don't remember the same. Oh, saw Freddy in 3D too

I saw it in 3D when I was 6. There's one scene I vividly remember where the camera is low on the ground and the car drives right at / over you, scared me enough to pull off my 3D glasses.

I don't think I saw a 3D film again until Avatar.

You can now watch it streaming on Netflix. Sadly it is still the fullscreen version.

I saw the movie myself when I was 15--the 3D today is nothing compared to what it used to be--ie: My wife and I saw Toy Story 3 in 3D, and there was no need for it, as nothing came out of the screen at you. Yes, I remember Metalstorm in 3D, along with Jaws 3, in the beginning of Jaws 3 a surfer gets eaten by the shark--of course! and only his arm was left in the water, I remember it looked like his arm was a couple of rows in front of me, so I tried to reach out and grab it-not really there, but fun anyway!, as well as Friday The 13th part 3-There was a scene where Jason squeezed a guy's head, and his eyeball popped out at you. As I said todays' 3D is nothing compared to the old style.

reply

Yeah, gimme the old style any ol' day. There were some really cool 3D effects in METALSTORM, which makes for some of its flaws.

If there's another way to get this (e.g. through a Japanese VHS tape in the anaglyph format), I'd like to hear it. I'm not about to pick up a DVD without an option to view this in the original Scope aspect ratio, but at least the old Japanese VHS is in widescreen and 3D, even if in anaglyph format (as far as 3D goes, to me anaglyph is at least better than nothing).
