This film screams for an SE. I'd love to see Tom Conti's dream scene reinstated, or at the very least included as a deleted scene. An audio commentary ir two would be wonderful!

Audio commentary *would* be good, but what are the chances of that after all this time (yikes, where on earth did 21 years go?!)

Could you please explain to an unenlightened and pretty dim viewer what Tom Conti's dream scene is. Ever grateful.... :)

The dream scene is Lawrence remembering back to the fall of Shanghai. Shortly before the retreat in the face of advancing Japanese troops, he was passing through a small town where he fell head over heels in love with a woman. He didn't get to spend much time with her before he had to move out, and she was evacuated; then of course he was captured. It fits in just before Cellier's flashback to his school years, when the pair of them are in solitary together (sort of!). You'll notice Lawrence wakes up suddenly, and Celliers calms him down; that's where the dream fits in. I guess they thought it made the film too long.

Aha - that makes a lot of sense. It would give more insight into who Lawrence is - you really only get to see the man in the camp.

Ummm.... a lightbulb just lit up in my head - your description makes me think maybe I *have* seen that scene, although my memory of it is a little sketchy... she is Chinese... and are they at a bar when he has to leave. I could of course be thinking of another film.... wouldn't be surprised :)
