David Bowie's pupils

Anybody know the story behind David Bowie's different sized pupils? The right one is small and the left one is large.

The cause for Bowie's distinct pupils is due to a fight he had over a girl with a friend of his, George Underwood. The fight did not leave Bowie's vision impaired though.

Thanks very much for the information. I have not seen a lot of David Bowie before I saw this movie, and didn't know the story.

I'm sorry I must be a little thick, what does your message mean? What are you laughing out loud at?

Um - you do realise that this is David Bowie? yes, that David Bowie, one of the biggest rock stars in the world ever. Ziggy Stardust? The Thin White Duke? and all that?

I apologize unreservedly for not giving proper deference to this icon. I still don't get the LOL bit.

Well, I suppose Premmie thought it funny that you didn't know of Bowie. Perhaps he's not as internationally mega-famous as we Brits think. Sorry about that, then.

You might have seen him as an actor in The Man Who Fell to Earth, or Labyrinth?

Thank you for the non-sarcastic reply. I certainly know of David Bowie and have seen some of his work, just never close-ups like the movie in question. Now I will spend some time looking at his past work.

His vision is technically impaired, in the sense that his permanently dilated pupil gives to this eye a much narrower depth of field. His other eye is flexible (from narrow to wide depth of field, aka from dilation to contraction) but the damaged one is not. He mush see the world kind of strange, especially under bright light when his intact eye's iris will be very contracted. For those having no clue about DOF let's speculate how Bowie sees the world :

Narrow DOF / wide pupil means that when you look at your screen whatever there is behind it (or even in front of it), that you can see with your peripheral vision, is blurred. The wider the pupil, the more blurred everything you do not focus your eyes on. The reverse applies to wide DOF / contracted pupil (your peripheral vision is not blurred but focused).

So under a pretty bright light Bowie will see the world rather strangely. The eye with the flexible pupil that can be contracted will have a wide DOF while the other eye will have a narrow DOF. It will be like wearing only one contact lens if you are short-sighted but.. not quite (he will have no problem focusing his eyes anywhere, such as reading letters from a distance or up close, only a peripheral vision issue, like the one I described).

His left pupil is permanently dilated due to the punch described above.
