Yonoi's attraction to Celliers


I guess it's likely that it was basic romantic attraction, and since the film opens with a scene of a homosexual act being punished, I suppose this is correct. I ask because it wasn't really clear to me what hold Celliers had over Yonoi...I guess Yonoi just fell for him, but was unable to act upon his attraction?

I guess Yonoi's attraction had two components: sexual attraction and admiration of Celliers as a great soldier. It is possible that in traditional Japanese military culture, these two things are inseparable.
