Location of movie

Does anyone know where this movie was filmed?

In a separate thread, someone posted the following: " they were filming the baseball scenes of this movie accross the street from my house at a catholic high school in Downey, or South Gate, CA called Pius X High School"

reply

i believe a majority of the house scenes and them driving around on the motorcycle were filmed in Venice CA.

It's set in Venice, California. That's why they're driving over all those raised roads that clear the canals. Strangely it's got to be the ugliest parts of Venice. There are much nicer/prettier/funkier parts than shown in this movie. I suppose they're trying to make the point that until Max comes along they're just regular people and getting by but not rich.

When the movie was made the actual canal area of Venice, shown in the film, was not that desirable a neighborhood. In the thirty plus years since it has seen a renaissance.

A lot of the school scenes (interior and exterior) were filmed at my old high school, Alexander Hamilton High, in Los Angeles (technically a neighborhood called Palms). I lived right down the street on Livonia. I graduated in 1982, so was not attending when it was probably filmed (late '82?).

Their house was located in one of the alleys near the intersection of Palms Blvd and California St, I believe (might be off on the CA st part, but I lived about one minute away, so I'm certain of the Palms part).

They shot the other side of the house in a different area in Venice tho, as that house (at the time) either backed up to another house or had a deep yard on the non-alley side where you wouldn't have been able to see the real front of the house, which faced Palms Blvd.

Back then, a school teacher may have been able to afford rent, but the 80s saw everyone who didn't make 6 figures or own their houses priced out of the neighborhood. All of the older buildings have been rebuilt or spruced up, and there are ZERO properties/houses in Venice that aren't worth at least a million dollars now. No way a person (like Nora) could live hand to mouth and afford or live there.
