Comedy?

The video box describes this as an "uproarious Blake Edwards comedy," but I beg to differ. It's about how one man's sexual appetite brought him anguish and, eventually, death. I found this film very dark, and I thought the few moments of slapstick compromised its tone.

Dark Comedy. There were parts the were funny some laugh under your breath but also near the end just sadness...

It is a very dark comedy, or perhaps a tragic comedy. I think anyone who saw this expecting the usual Burt schtick would be disappointed.

Yes but a comedy none the less... it surely was trying to be a drama. It tried to hard to be funny. There is that one moment where Burt is trying to bed that married woman and tries to had to his car, and if memory serves me correct had like a dog or something glued to hand and trying to drive or something or rather... that was pretty funny. His approach to women and his honesty. But due to the director the studio probably forced the film to be more slapstick and what not... but was a remake of foreign film to my belief...
I laughed quite a bit, love the film.

Yes, it was a remake of a François Truffaut film, and the European influence shows. I think they wanted this to appeal to Burt Reynolds' audience, so it comes off as rather slapsticky – until the end, of course. It is funny at times and depressing at others. I think the studio and the audience didn't know what to make of it, so it didn't do well at the box office. It's one of Burt's stranger films, but worthwhile nonetheless.

Well its a comedy!!! There are moments, times, patches of length where you laugh. I don't care what the studio influence or the forced thoughts to the audience were. It's a Blake Edwards project so there would be comedy I bet... and with his spin or take on it. Think Chris Rock, "I Think I Love My Wife" which was a remake of a french film. It very well may have started something... its a comedy with heart. It makes you laugh but tugs at your heart... somewhat in the sights of Judd Apatow, whose Knocked Up and 40 Yr Old Virgin plus his new Funny People, have overly funny spurts of comedy, yet have heart and tug at your emotions when least expected. Its a comedy that works with moments of drama that draw you in... it's a comedy that makes you FEEL. And it makes your laugh but also tries to make you cry... it hurts, but its so well, love the film.
