Incorrect flag display.

At the military ball, hanging from the wall, the American Flag was displayed with the blue field of stars in the upper right-hand corner. Shouldn't this blue field of stars be displayed in the upper left-hand corner?

reply

If an American flag is hung on a wall and the wall runs east/west, the field of stars is set toward the east. If the wall runs north/south, the stars are set toward the north.

Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Thanks Jaymz13,

I never knew that until your post. Wouldn't that mean that the blue field would always be in the upper right hand corner regardless of the direction of the wall? Thanks.
Just came accross this: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/faq.htm#q80

That north/south/east/west rule is for hanging a flag over a street, not against a wall.

You are absolutely correct, the blue field should always be in the upper left corner.

The following is quoted directly from the Flag Code http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagcode.htm Section 7, Paragraph i:

"When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street."

Notice it says it should be "to the observer's left".

Hi cantwglory-1,

Thank you for your reply. I glad that I'm correct with the blue field being in the upper, left-hand corner as seen by the viewer. In addition to being correct, I personally prefer the blue field in the upper, left-hand corner.

Best and thanks again.
