Worst movie ever made in HISTORY

SPOILERS BELOW, BUT DONT WORRY, ITS SUCH A BAD FILM THEY WILL SAVE YOU FROM MAKING THE MISTAKE OF WATCHING IT.

This is, without doubt, the runaway winner of the title:
Worst movie ever made in HISTORY.

(Btw, e=a sometimes in the following, you'll get it).

I mean, its Ed Wood bad. Its Plan 9 From Outer Space with junkies, fashion wenkers and a cute little UFO thrown in.

I sat through this 2 hours of some of the most pretentious crep I have ever experienced, and I have SEEN Stellarc live! I am a huuuge fan of slow film making, directors like Wim Wenders and David Lynch (on a good day) and David Cronenberg (on a VERY good, Naked Lunch / Existenz type day), can hold my attention - because they have Talent.

But I couldn't stop watching - anymore than anyone can stop watching Plan 9 once they've started. The trainwreck is just too fascinating.

No, surely they are not going to try and tell us they are serious....they couldn't......oh no, they are.......

This is a laughable example of the cocaine-induced mistakes seen at the end of the 70's and the start of the 80's.

I thought my head was going to explode from one more morsel of:
* Apalling acting
* Pointless dialogue
* ONE MORE piece of "Sincere" "Performance" "Art"
* Swearing for the sake of it and not even in a funny Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels / Big Lebowski kind of way
* "Gimme some coke" "Gimme some smack"
* THAT MUSIC !!!! WHO WAS THE IDIOT WHO CREATED THAT GOD-AWWWWWWFUL SOUNDTRACK !!!???

I'll give it 2 points (out of 10000000000) for 2 things only:

* Some of the panning shots of New York, NYUSA, in 1982 were actually kinda nice to see. A lot less buildings I suspect (except for 2 of course).

* The final, final scene, partly becaus it IS the final seen and the viewer is finally released from their torture, but also because the scene of her caught in the 'beam' of the saucer is actually cool - the only cool bit of action in the entire film!

As such a shockingly awful piece of film-wasting, I guess it (possibly) deserves a place in history.

Like Ed Wood's films.

Anyway - don't watch it, you'll regret it. Seriously.

Wow, what a clever comeback. Anyone who doesn't like garbage likes another type of garbage? Great thinking there, chief.

You obviously have no sense of humour what so ever.

I think you rather missed the point, Liquid Sky is amazing on many levels. I don't really have the energy to explain why (bad ludes) and I imagine it wouldn't make a difference to your opinion anyway, but it's a really remarkable film. Keep in mind the micro-budget and the fact it was made by members of the old school of Russian film-making. Think of the themes, the costumes, the far-out images and gleefully nihilistic and nonchalant attitudes to massive drug-use. This film is perfect for it's time and for NY.
Try to be a little more open minded in future perhaps.

"scene of her caught in the 'beam' of the saucer is actually cool" and grow-up, or watch Transformers and *totally* love it.

No, you're wrong. This is in many ways an amazing film.

And the music is great.

The narrative is so delightfully disjointed, no way the 'average' movie-watcher (or even the well-seasoned one) is gonna comprehend it all in the first viewing; a review with benefit of hindsight brings it all into focus. This is one of the films from back in "the day", along with Eraserhead, that I cut my teeth on in the realm of cult cinema. And Anne Carlisle is like a Laura Dern to me with her incredible range of character portrayal - COME BACK TO US!!!!

@CounterPaul

Yep,this was one of the films I also cut my teeth on back in the day while getting into cult cinema---one great thing about the early days on VHS tapes was that you could see a lot of cult films that aren't even available now on any format at the local store. I found out about this film from the classic film book CULT MOVIES 2, by Danny Peary---never even heard of it before then. It seems to have been totally forgotten, unlike other cult classic '80's cinema. Haven't seen it since then, and it certainly made an impression on me. Here it is in all its glory on the 'Tube:

Anybody comparing this film to Ed Wood's stuff is wearing their ignorance on the outside. Not to take anything away from Mr Wood, but Liquid Sky has stuff going on on so many levels, I'm not really surprised a casual viewer (the OP) sees it as pretentious junk.

One wants to be careful about trashing something one doesn't "get" on the first viewing. With years comes wisdom and maturity, and perhaps embarassment if one contemplates too much the shallow interpretations one used to put on things.

I don't know how to put it more politely than that. If the message eluded you, then here it is again: Grow up, you idiot.

Saw this when it first came out and I couldn't believe it was so high-camp. Pure enjoyment from start to finish. Yes, it was obviously made on a shoe string budget and yes, the acting is less than professional. But the music ROCKS!!!! This is the kind of movie to watch when you are either drunk or stoned. Just chill out and enjoy. Just ordered it on DVD and I can't wait to see it again!

You obviously have not seen either The Room or Manos: The Hand of Fate.

i agree, this film was laughably rubbish.

it was fun to watch to the extent of how hilariously bad it was, it certainly made my hangover go away.

for anybody who likes this film, please try Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, you'll probably take it seriously and love it.

i'm waving my hand over your digital head.

You're cracked, my friend! To compare Liquid Sky to an Ed Wood film tells me that you have a ways to go before you have seen truly bad cinema. LIQUID SKY is a perfect harbinger of the excess and plastic atmosphere that were the 1980's and it has some really beautiful cinematography. It's not a perfect film, but I, and many like me, love the film.

i worked at a place in melbourne city called The Moviefinders, and some modeling company wanted this film to show there team, after they brought it back, i had a look at it, and to this day it has to be one of my top ten favorits, its so underated, i mean it took me a few viewings to get an idea of what was going on, and still dont understand parts of the film, but that is what is so great about it

I have not seen Liquid Sky in over 25 years now. However I still remember how I was affected by the film.

I saw it three nights in a row. The first night I was actually very disoriented by the film. But I was determined to go a second time. The next time I knew what to expect and so I was able to settle in and watch the film more closely. The third night I really enjoyed the film and began to see what I considered the point and the thread of the movie.

To me it was a movie about people trying to throw away all the rules of society. Scenes such as seeing the size of the alien space ship, (as someone said, like a hat box), allows the audience to also begin to lose their frame of reference to many assumed givens about life and societal norms.

Unknown actors, character playing two sexes,

The scenes of Manhattan, the clothes, the music, everything....just a big off center of expectation or norm or totally disturbing depending upon each individual audience member.

However you will find that virtually every character has one or two things from the old "normal" life that they cannot let go of. The one woman is actually in love with the "ideal" of her girlfriends past and not her current character.

Other comments of "apple pie on the porch" or putting drug use in the reference to how it used to me the norm for validation.

As the characters bounce like pin balls through this new world they have...and each views the world a little differently.....each clings to something from the past or outside as a mental anchor.

In order for this to get across to the audience this is done as well TO the audience. I really see virtually everyone who sees this film mentally clinging to or re enforcing everthing in their lives while watching the film.

And in a bizarre and perverse way I feel that the more most people leave the film totally confused that that is really a main point of the film. What can we let go of to view a different world as portrayed in film.

In the late 70's I lived in a building of "punk rockers" and each person felt that they were living in a new and exciting culture, yet I found that almost all of them were in reality some of the most normal people I knew. Besides dress and music they were really almost "leave it to Beaver" clean cut people.

Film may present what many consider to be alien societies but they are all anchored way to much in normal life. (It seems that 90% of all Romans and aliens have English accents in movies). And I challenge anyone to name 10 war movies that actually left you terrified and shell shocked at the end of the movie.

And to take the fact that it is by Russians experiencing not only a new country but a very small sub culture within that country and expressing the loss of so many social and physical cues about life is profound.

It is with the respect that Liquid Sky was able to create a totally sensory challenging film in so many ways was to me the true expression of brilliance.

Couldn't agree with you more, gltoffic. There is so much humor and social commentary in this film. If you lived through the 80's as a young adult you get so much of the clever and sly lampooning of the posturing of the time, as well as the search for some kind of unique indentiy while clinging wildly to a group mentality ("counter culture"/"fringe"/"new wave" clothing, hair, attitude, clubbing, drugs, etc.). "My Rhythm Box " is completely hilarioius and reminds me so much of 80's masturbatory performance artists.

There's a line in there that cracks me up to this day: "No one f&cks at the club. Everyone is gay."

And, I always marvel at that penthouse apartment with an amazing view of Empire State Building -- the angles in the film of the Empire State Buidling always make it look like a gigantic syringe.

At the end of the day -- all anyone (including the aliens) wants in this film is a a few moments of eurphoria / happiness -- whether that be through smack, an orgasm or slice of apple pie.
