What's wrong with this flick?

Rather than being a diatribe of the heartbreak of understanding your sexuality, it seems more about the hazards of cheating. The Lianna's film teacher husband cheats which makes wifey want to cheat on him with her female instructor, who herself is cheating on her partner; after pronouncing her deep heartfelt love for the female, sacrificing her family and security in the process, heroine picks up some babe from a bar and proceeds to cheat on her "beloved".

Riiiight!

The only person who shows some legit emotion is the best friend who after confused hesitation over her chum's transformation states that, in spite of it all, she still cares for her.

I think the hidden moral is Sayles wants us to rethink sex. Warmth and kindness means a heck of a lot more than getting laid.

My own parents have this weird system in that they're still married and still live under the same roof, but they see other people now. It's sort of a mutual understanding between them that they're no longer in love but can still be friends. I sort of wish Lianna and her husband had tried that--raising the kids should come first. And since Lianna has no education it's really unsettling to see her have to go out, live on her own and become a pharmacist clerk or whatever. It's Sayles at his most stone-cold.
