Most underrated scorsese

This movie is so underrated
It should be up there with taxi driver, Goodfellas etc..

reply

Yep.

Top 5 Scorsese and one of De Nero's finest performances.

Superbly acted, well-crafted, quirky, unique, and rather ahead of its time. It really is a great film.

While I don’t hold the same admiration for most of Scorsese’s classic/beloved films like I used to (e.g., Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Casino, The Departed.... I know, I know), The King of Comedy is one film that still impresses me. I’m fond his other well-known dark comedy After Hours almost as much as The King of Comedy and also consider that one to be underrated, however the latter is more brilliant and holds up better.

reply

Absolutely! It's an absolute master piece. Also Robert De Niro's greatest performance, shows that he's not a one trick pony!

reply

Agreed, Same with After Hours (1985).

reply

Yeah, I'd say After Hours is more underrated.

I often forget about this movie when I'm thinking of Scorcese, and I don't know why. I guess he's been SOOO prolific, some of the less shocking early films get shuffled to the back. Gangs of NY, Wolf of Wall Street, Departed, so many significant films that have good and not-so-good points. I just looked at his directing filmography, it's crazy good. Leo has been adopted as his go-to guy lately.

reply

I totally agree.

It's actually my favourite Scorsese (and one of my top ten favourite films of all time), just ahead of Goodfellas and another underrated film, Silence, which is high praise in my case since Scorsese is possibly my favourite filmmaker, and certainly, IMHO, the one big filmmaker who has never made a bad film (even his weakest films, like his New York Stories entry and Gangs of New York, are good if not great).

reply

It was for years but over the last ten years or so, it's critical stock has gone up and many consider it De Niro's best performance. Many would put it in Scorsese's top 5.

I think the likes of After Hours, Bringing Out The Dead and Silence I would consider more underrated then King of Comedy.

You may be right
