this movie is easily Top 10 Best Movies of ALL time......

Hi. I had to make an account here to post about this movie. This is my first post ever but I love and will respect this site.

I heard it was some more of a 'rare' movie, so I decided to watch it.

The first time I watched it, it did not hit me till the end of the movie how amazing it really was.

Upon the second watching I was in love with every aspect of this movie.

The music is breathtaking, and the storyline mysterious and brilliant.

This movie is really one of my all time top 10 favorite movies ever, EVER.

I cannot explain what the symbolism to me means, it is that great, and how I think this movie has inspired other movies and tv shows.

By Far, the best part of this movie is near the end, when the old man realizes through the love for his daughter, that this seemingly sort of 'good' evil entity demands he kill his daughter, and he realizes that it is evil and refuses to take the talisman out of the keep.. and the music kicks in. I am a man but this movie almost made me cry and that only happens in a very few movies.

I cannot believe I never heard of this movie before. It does not need to be remade because it is already perfect but a remake would be awesome if done right.

To hear that possibly 2 hours of footage was cut out of this movie breaks my heart and keeps me wondering. I love this movie, it is one of the best movies of ALL time. What it means to me I cannot explain, but the meaning and symbolism is astonding.

And at the VERY end of the movie..the old man has this look on his face like he knows who the purple eyed man is and then at the very end the main female role she looks back at the camera as saying that we are also the good and the evil. as if she is looking back at the hole in the keep but she is really looking at the camera at the viewer for them to decide if they are the evil(evil demon) or the light, (guy with purple eyes, who is creation or God itself in human form and a traveler of the universes)

Anyone else agree, mainly on that this is one of the best movies to ever grace the cinema world?

reply

I am in wholehearted agreement, this is definitely not only in my top ten of all time, but top 5 even!
Its nice to see someone else who geniunly appreciates this masterpiece

I am glad you agree. And I am glad I was able to watch this movie.

There are not many movies out there that I love this much.

A masterpiece indeed!

reply

Masterpiece is the word. Top ten for me too. ;)

I have opinions of my own, but I don't always agree with them - George Bush

If there is so much extra footage of this great movie, and Michael Mann is not interested in making an extended cut of the film, then perhaps he should release footage to fans and a 'Fan Edit'could be made by an enthusiast. This happened with 'Dune' <David Lynch>,and the results were very impressive..

If you haven't already, you might consider looking up The Holy Mountain, Stalker (the Tarkovsky) and The Ninth Configuration. I think you might enjoy all of them.

Cheers.

The Holy Mountain, as well as El Topo, are also on my top 10 favorite list. One of these days I'm going to fill out my profile section on my favorites. I love good movie recommendations, thank you. I would like to say my all time favorite movie lists consists of about 50 movies so far, (of course, there are movies not on the list because I have never heard of them or seen them yet, and I may never will), from that list I can deduce it to 10, and I plan on making posts for all of my 10 favorite movies.

I can remember watching The Holy Mountain for the first time. My mind was blown. I knew I would never be able to explain what that movie means to me, it is just..too hard, as it is in many of my favorites. And even El Topo might rank higher than The Holy Mountain for me, but it is really hard to decide. The Holy Mountain is one of the most amazing movies ever, but El Topo holds a special place in me. I also do not mind movies with subtitles, often times people go 'boo subtitles' but I have found many masterpieces have subtitles.

I have a feeling I am going to like Stalker (the Tarkovsky), and The Ninth Configuration.

A hint towards the level, I really enjoyed the movie Cold Souls, but I do not think it ranks on my top 10 list, somewhere in the 11-20. I am into a wide range and many genre of variety but I am very picky about comedy because I like sci fi/horror/mystery/occult, better.

Some movies want to make me vomit, not because they are gruesome, but because they are used for control. The ultimate movies are the ones free from restriction and allowed to shine the brilliant creation that seems so increasingly rare these days. and I leave on that note,

Wow!

I think this movie is a steaming pile of poo! I wouldn't speak for F. Paul Wilson, but I understand that he doesn't like it either.

Perhaps because he's the author and I'm a fan of the book, but the movie has no redeeming factors in it what-so-ever (for me).

It strays needlessly too far from the story line and adds nothing.

Having said that, I could understand how someone may enjoy it had they not read the book first.

Glad you enjoyed it

Well the reason Wilson doesn't like it is that Mann changed important parts of the movie. I won't give spoilers, but who dies and how they die bears no resemblance to the novel. And character development is totally nonexistent. The real motives of every character in the film are unknown and not even attempted to explain. And the crosses and what they symbolize is not broached at all. Saw the movie (loved it), read the book (really loved it), and saw the movie again. Ugh!! Not close to being a great film -- just a very illogical atmospheric movie loosely based on the novel. I would think the 3 hour version would address all my comments but we will never know.

Hello, I am glad to see there are other fans like myself that understand real art.

My story of this film is:
I was in High School circa 1988 and a friend of mine who was 2 grades older than me was this really cool guy. I was already a huge film fan at 15 and I happen to ask him what his fave film was. He said the Keep. This was only about 4 years after the films release and it was on VHS. So I rented it. It was hard for me to get the first time around, so I watched it 2 or 3 mores times. Then it hit me big time. What a gorgeous film! I have watched every single Mann film since :]

I would love to see this remastered uncut on DVD with a cool box.
I do have the WS Laserdisc, so far this is the best version to date.

Cheers!

My bad, 6 years after the films release. My math was off lol.

Same here. But on the first watch, not the second.

That whole speech is fantastic.
And the end!
When he stands his ground ans screams "Take it!" I love it.

To hear that possibly 2 hours of footage was cut out of this movie breaks my heart and keeps me wondering. I love this movie, it is one of the best movies of ALL time. What it means to me I cannot explain, but the meaning and symbolism is astonding.

I'm glad to see it affected in such a way. Great fans are wonderful people to come across.

This is my first viewing and I'm liking it, though a couple performances I think are a little thin. I like the air of mystery so far.

For those who like this kind of film, I recommend Jade Warrior. You can watch it here on IMDb.

And Deathwatch.

I didn't think this was one of the best movies of all time, but it certainly is one of the most original and creatively frightening. I also agree with liking Deathwatch; that was a fantastic film; the ending is controversial, but it's the kind where you decide for yourself. Another like it is The Objective; i HIGHLY recommend that movie. One of the best thrillers ever made. But yes, The Keep is a great movie

Hogarth, you stay. I go. No following.

Have you heard about "The Bunker"?

It was ok as I remember it... but haven't watch Deathwatch nor The Objective yet, thought they were in my Watchlist already.

It seems original cut lasted over three hours so the ending could be a bit rushed. A lot is left unexplained. Some dialogues and performances in general seem corny. It has qualities to be considered a cult movie, but comparing it to masterpieces like Stalker is crazy. The old man realizes big demon like entity with red glowing eyes is evil only when it starts to threaten his daughter. No *beep* professor.
