Dianne Wiest
I did see this film once and I must admit the only thing I really remember about it is the powerhouse performance by Dianne Wiest as a battered wife which should have earned heran Oscar nomination.

shareAgreed!! This film haunted me for years. Dianne plays a wife that is unable, emotionally, to leave her abusive unstable husband. Dianne shows to be pretty unstable herself in this film. The way she *ends* it with her husband is unforgettable!!!
"Some laughed. He let them. His own heart laughed, and that was enough."
-A Christmas Carol
God. It just doesn't get any more intense and haunting than this performance. Vastly underrated and yes, Oscar-worthy indeed.
First time I saw this I wasn't really all that familiar with Dianne Wiest's work, especially her early stuff. I wasn't sure if it WAS her, because she looked and acted so different in this than her other films. But yeah I spent the majority of this movie silenced in complete awe - eyes wide open and jaw to the floor, chills all over. All of this was of course due to Wiest's performance; the rest of the film (cast, storylines, etc.) didn't even feel WORTHY of her. I gotta admit I always stop the movie after her tragic yet triumphant exit.
There's a REASON Martina McBride made a hit song about this story.

I know this post is ancient but I agree. I don't even think she was nominated but she should have been!
I think she's the saddest girl ever to hold a martini.
