Has Anyone Seen This Movie

I can't find it at any of my local video stores, and I see that it's coming to dvd on November 1, I'm thinking about buying it, since i can't seem to get a hold of it anywhere. How good is it?

it is on dvd and netflix has it. it is a good movie and well worth seeing. it is one of the movies produced by ff coppola's zeotrop, made on sound stages. quite compelling mixing fact and fiction, mixing movies, novels and biography all together. everyone does a good job. highly recommended!!

there was at least one exterior and interior in san francisco.
i was on the set, but if you know the city you can tell which one
was a location shot. the other was interior at city hall.

reply

i am watching it right now. pretty good. skipping a lil.

Too bad they didn't shoot a scene in John's Grill located on 63 Ellis Street. It was Hammett's favorite restaurant in San Fransisco, and Sam Spade goes there in the Maltese Falcon novel.

I found this film on dvd at the New York City Public Library today and brought it home, because I like Hammett as a writer and was hoping this would be an interesting movie. It wasn't. This movie is amateur night in Dixie in writing, in acting, in directing. It's so so so dull. One is better off watching The Maltese Falcon one more time.

I saw it last night and loved it! I'd never seen Frederick Forrest before and he was great. A bit of film noir.

It used to play frequently on either Showtime or HBO (I can't remember which). I recorded it once on VHS and watched it over and over. It's an excellent movie.

I just checked Amazon. It is out on DVD. I might order it...

Watched on Netflix, when they had it available for streaming almost a year ago. Was the best movie i've seen in a while, Produced by Coppola and Directed by Wenders, it was no wonder i loved this movie. A ton of Film Noir and interesting characters all throughout(David Patrick Kelly) known from the Warriors(1979), plays a body guard(henchman) and is very amusing to watch. John Barry's score is amazing like usual(simple but perfect for film). Anyone who is into films from the 1930's-1950's, will enjoy this GEM. This and Body Heat were amongst the best Film Noir Based Movies from 1981, that i can recollect.

It's been many years since I saw this on cable. I'm a big fan of Hammett and the adaptations of his books and this didn't disappoint. Too bad it only has two discussions going here.

Just started watching, good so far....

Lovefilm? Tell them I want it when you give it back.

Hammet's also rather nattily played by Jason Robards in Julia. He so blatantly stole the film from Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave, he could have gone to jail for it.

reply

It was a pretty good tv movie. It rather reminded me of The Dain Curse (James Coburn) although with conspicuously less money spent on locations.

I thought Robards was the definitive Hammett but Forrest was pretty good. He didn't get his head chopped off either.

It'll be in the post later....
