Anyone have any ideas about what happened to Rafferty, and the other people in the town?

We never see Rafferty again. When Dan walked into the motel's office on the last night; the tv is one but Rafferty is nowhere to be seen. Reckon he was killed offscreen, maybe? Also, the townspeople (if they were real people), do you think Cochran had a trick them?
