Very dated, but still really good

AL's stylized photography is a great throwback to the early 80s MTV generation like myself. The story and music go hand in hand. And the writing is excellent, IMO.

In the late 90s there was a great 'E true hollywood story' episode about the making of Flashdance. I'd love to see it again. It was as fascinating as the movie itself.

Cheers!

So why the hell you say it's "dated"?
To me it sounds perfectly good, has its own style, and it's still modern.
Only thing dating it is the fashion of the times, other than that it's way better than most crap coming out nowadays. Definitely better than ALL new dance movies.

i agree with you totally. but, that in itself is what dated means, lol.

i wasn't saying it's bad. quite the opposite. i think it's excellent.

there's other dated stuff too btw, like the polock jokes. and the MTV style colored smoke...

but again, i'm not saying it's bad. was just giving heads up to new viewers to give it a chance and NOT dismiss it if it looks oldish. that's all.

cheers

ok, I don't want to sound too anal but dated has usually a bad connotation to it.
You wouldn't call an old wine "dated", you call it aged. Unless it's crap, than you might say "it's dated" (I guess the stuff you mentioned is dated crap, but the movie as a whole is still quite modern).

I think the problem lies within the english language: dated should indeed mean "it refers to a particular date or period". That would fit your definition perfectly.
Instead, dated really means "it's outdated". Or am I wrong?

reply

I would agree with that, yes. Great points, well said.

In other news... you deserve an award for a truly grand achievement: you managed to garner a reply from me after I swore I was done with this site.

Kudos :)

reply

LTUM why don't you like this site?
Do you know a better alternative?

It's ok in my book, I wish there were 10x the users like imdb used to be, it's quite difficult to get any discussion going.
Anyway, why do you want to leave?
I just met you here briefly and I liked chatting with you.

reply

Well, mainly for the reasons you just mentioned. The fact that there is very low activity levels, so most of the time I feel like I am talking to myself. (see my echo chamber thread from August lol)

That's mainly it. I was quite active here over the summer, then slowed down when it started to feel like I was wasting my time. Plus what added fuel to the fire was some smartass replies from a handful of regulars on t his site who don't really enjoy talking movies, they just like telling others how they are wrong. So basically that took away all the reasons I was here to begin with, hence I opted to bow out. I was so pissed at first I had planned to delete all 800 of my posts, but I never got around to it, then you replied to this one so I am responding to you now.

cool username. good show.

Have a nice day. :)

reply

Too bad, you sound like a cool guy.
I agree with you, I wish there was more people here (I always see the same ones around).
I wish there was a link from IMDB to here (or to another site like this one), so we would have the same amount of activity that used to be there.
If you noticed, on imdb the amount of user reviews for any title has gone through the roof since they closed the chat, because people like to discuss a movie after watching it. And that's the only way they can now.

I guess amazon prefers it this way, rather than having a conversation going they want sterile "reviews", so it's easy to control.
They're turning into apple:-(

reply

Yes they are punishing their base.

I did a thread here about how imdb's traffic cut in dropped 505 since feb 2017. i posted a graph, thought it was interesting. 4 or 5 people replied, lol

nice chatting with you.

It's an 80's film and you have to be able to appreciate it for the period it was made in. If you are the sort of person who is going to pick it to death for all the far fetched elements than yeah it probably will be very "dated".

reply

yep

reply

No it's not. Maybe the fashion and cheesy strip club scenes but it's actually a timeless story about the female working class.

reply

for fuck's sake. i said i locve the film! you motherfuckers argue about every damn thing that comes up. hence, why i'm deleting all my posts and leaving this cess pool of a site altogether.

hope you see this before it's deleted.

and one more time, the film is dated. i didn't say the story is dated. the film. music, sets, clothing. or are you just not very smart?

geesh

reply

The film is dated. It's cheesy in many ways. But the female working class narrative is more applicable now than in the 1980's. Plenty of women take two jobs in order to pay their way through school. Many work in construction and yes, work as strippers or instagram models for the extra money as cost of living and rent is explosive these days. Alex was actually a prototype for the future woman that was going to emerge later on. Working class, ambitious and willing to work multiple jobs to get there.

reply

I don't know how old you are but women working multiple jobs to make ends meet is nothing new and was certainly commonplace in the 80's. We didn't have Instagram back then to model on and no one in my group stripped, but we all did what we had to do, including work multiple jobs if necessary. The "female working class narrative" was absolutely applicable for that time and probably even before that.

You seem like the sensitive one - sure, people can be rude or dumb but why on earth would you go and erase all of your posts? Just leave the site if you want but deleting all of your posts is strange

reply

guilty as charged: i am strange.

and sensitive.

but mostly deleting all my posts (which i didnt do btw) would've been a type of demarcation device for me. i don't expect anyone to understand.

what happened then is i found myself suddenly being targeted by some hostile admins for whatever reason, and my only means to completely cut ties to the site was to erase all history. i cut bait when the line is hung up.

too bad though, i wish i hadn't, because i had some great essays here which i deleted. gone now.

but yes, i admit i am way too sensitive. it's just a cross i bear. maybe you won't hate me for it?

reply

.....in my day we called it passion, lol

reply

It's a fun fantasy type film really. No one believes she is really a welder nor does anyone believe a bar with workers are sitting around watching women perform pretentious artzy type dances without taking their clothes off.

It's a product of it's time. I still enjoy watching it.

reply

The story has a lot of parallels with CODA and Billy Elliot. Working class kids. Raw talent. An audition scene at the end which offers a life changing opportunity.
