What Was Wrong With Rosa?

What was wrong with her?
Why did she die?
OBVIOUS SPOILER:
Rosa dies of an infection she received when he and Enrique were crossing into the US through an old sewer line. As they were going through, a group of rats attacked them and bit her several times. That's why the doctor is quite horrified when he gets the results from her examination.

shareWhat version would not have that scene? And why would it be edited anyways? It's important in the end because it shows the price that they paid to make it in el norte ends up killing them in the end. They pass through the depths of the earth to make it to the promised land and in the end, that's what does her in.
shareThey released a classroom version which is dramatically cut to about 45 minutes. It's meant to show the struggles and give students insight at opposed to just enjoying the movie. It ends right as she dies.
shareThere never was an authorized "classroom' edition of El Norte - this must have been done by some rogue pirate with no authority - truly disgusting. The film has always been meant to be seen in its full version - the complete running time is 2 hours and 20 minutes. When the new Criterion edition comes out - street date January 20, 2009 according to the Criterion web site - you will be able to see the true - complete version of the film with ALL the scenes. Also it will be a beautifully restored version supervised by director, Gregory Nava. It will include a one hour documentary about the making of the film and a director's commentary that will answer many of the questions about the symbolism of the film as well as many other things. For those who have seen incomplete versions, please see the "real" version - it's quite an experience.

shareMurine typhus is what she had which is only spread by rat fleas, regular typhus is spread by body lice which is why the doctor isolated Rosa, so the doctor delaying her proper DX and the cardiac strain, may have killed rosa. So she died a virgin, that's a shame.
