Bad music

Not sure what version was broadcasted when I saw it
– probably the DVD - but the synthetic music score was awful.
This is a great movie, and it deserves better.

reply

I agree. The bad music was a distraction.

I feel the same way about the synthesized score; it's pretty awful. I think it was a symptom of the times in which the movie was made. 1983 was the height of the synthesizer being used with abandoned enthusiasm in pop music and other applications. Someone probably thought it would be cool -- and more importantly, cheap -- at the time.

When I think up a decent sig...I'll let you know.

reply

I agree. Actually the score itself is fine but the film had a tight budget so for financial reasons it was done on a synthesiser rather than hiring an orchestra to play and record it. Its not like the film was expected to get a massive worldwide release. It was a smallish independent British film not backed by any of the major Hollywood studios so an elaborate film soundtrack was deemed an unnecessary expense.

reply

Oh, it's just horrid. It's distracting, as someone else said, sounds cheap, plus it dates the film terribly. It's such a shame as I think everything else about the film is great.

reply

Wow, you've got to be kidding!
I loved the music in this film

reply

I like this brand of synth music... unironically. But yes I agree - it ages the film. Probably its only flaw.

reply

I love the music, very 80's, which is the decade the film was set. This movie is 30 years old, any music from that period would date it.

Doesn't matter that it's obviously 80ies music. The puffy hair and the oversized clothes and skinny neckties take care of that anyway. The problem is not the style, or even that it's bad. The problem is that it's intrusive, and rarely (if ever) fits the mood of the scene it is supposed to illustrate but instead invades.

The synth music is like a below-average Giorgio Moroder score so if you were just listening to the soundtrack it's got its charms. However, it is SO out-of-place and wrong for the plot and images of this movie. The music is unbelievably jarring and not at all matching the tone and mood of E.Rita.
