Uneven acting

I've watched this film at least 20 times and still love it, but a surprising number of the performances are weak. Without calling anyone out in particular, the best performances were by Michael Pare, Mathew Laurance, and Joe Pantoliano. There were some real stinkers otherwise - gives it almost a low budget or indy feel to it.

I just caught the last half of this tonight on cable, and honestly, I thought Michael Pare's acting was awful. Mostly during the singing performances. Not sure if he was lip-synching, but if he was, he was way over-doing it.

It's funny that a lot of critic lauded Pare's lip syncing, but I agree with you on that point. I liked his acting a lot, but I thought his mouth movements while syncing were exaggerated. If I were the director, I would actually have Pare sing out loud to the soundtrack, no matter how bad he sang. I think in that way we'd get more realistic syncing. The amazing thing is how Pare's speaking voice is a dead match for John Cafferty's singing voice.
