Noticed something about the original soundtrack...

Okay, I have the original soundtrack of this movie, and either they skipped a song on the CD or they just did a typeo on the back of the cover. Tracks 1 through 4 are fine but past there it's not. Example: track 5 is "Hang Up My Rock N' Roll Shoes". Thats what it says on the back but when you play it in a CD player it's "Wild Summer Nights". Does anybody know why this?

It's just a typo on the back of the CD (and on the booklet inside). The CD itself counts "Down on My Knees" and "Hang Up My Rock'n'Roll Shoes" as a one-track medley, but they don't recognize that on the printed materials. (Mind you, this is only on the re-issue of the soundtrack on CD... the 1993 release of the CD doesn't even have "Wild Summer Nights" or "Tender Years" on it!!! - which is completely bizarre, because my original vinyl 12" that I bought in 1983 <yes I've loved this movie and the soundtrack since the beginning!> had.)

Now here's the really confusing part. The original soundtrack came out on Scotti Bros. Records, and the crappy CD release (the 1993 one) was also a Scotti Bros. Recrods issue. BUT the good version of the CD (the more recent release) which mirrors the 1983 Scott Bros. vinyl is put out by a company called Volcano Records. At least I think it mirrors the original vinyl (which I'd have to dig out to doublecheck) -- one thing is for sure, the original vinyl release had "Wild Summer Nights" and "Tender Years."

Yet more curiously, on the crappy 1993 CD release... Down on My Knees and Hang Up My Rock'n'Roll Shoes *ARE* two separate tracks. Arrgh... it's really a jumbled mess between the two of them.

The track listing for the current re-issue of the CD (which mirrors the original vinyl from 1983) SHOULD read:

1. On the Dark Side
2. Tender Years
3. Runaround Sue
4. Down on My Knees/Hang Up My Rock'n'Roll Shoes
5. Wild Summer Nights
6. Boardwalk Angel
7. Betty Lou's Got a New Pair of Shoes
8. Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)
9. Season in Hell (Fire Suite part 1)
10.Season in Hell (Fire Suite part 2)

Here's the track listing for the other Eddie & the Cruisers soundtrack CD release... (the one that apparently came from Bizarro World):

1. On the Dark Side
2. Mockingbird
3. Runaround Sue
4. Down on My Knees
5. Hang Up My Rock'n'Roll Shoes
6. Runaway
7. Boardwalk Angel
8. Betty Lou's Got a New Pair of Shoes
9. Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)
10.Season in Hell (Fire Suite)

*You might also notice that "Season in Hell" is treated as two separate tracks on the current CD release, but only one long track on the older (weirder) CD release.

Final analysis: HOW COULD THEY POSSIBLY RELEASE SOMETHING THEY CALLED THE SOUNDTRACK TO EDDIE & THE CRUISERS AND NOT INCLUDE "TENDER YEARS" AND/OR "WILD SUMMER NIGHTS" ????????????

That's great that you put up the two different versions.I was worried to death when I ordered my cd that it was going to be the right one. With the same songs that my old vinyl had.Thank goodness it was the newer release.

I've read that there were copyright issues that caused them to omit those two vital songs from the first issue.I guess they got those issues solved.

Query... what, if anything, is the relationship the movie has with the two "replacement cuts" ("Mockingbird" & "Runaway") which were substituted for "Tender Years" & "Wild Summer Nights" on the Soundtrack CD before resolution of the rights issue? Clearly, neither song was in the movie as released. Were they at some point planned to be covered in the movie? Were they covered in outtakes from the movie? And were the versions on the Soundtrack CD the original Charles/Inez Foxx & Del Shannon versions or were they John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band cover versions?

BTW, I've had a Scotti Brothers version of the CD since the CD was first released at the advent of the CD era in the mid 1980's and it has both "Tender Years" & "Wild Summer Nights" (just like on the original Scotti Brothers LP). I also have the recent Volcano version of the CD with both "Tender Years" & "Wild Summer Nights". So, the version of the CD with "Mockingbird" & "Runaway" must've come between those two CD versions...

I never understood how they could leave 2 very important songs out of the soundtrack, especially when Tender Years was on the radio (along with On the Dark Side).

The only reason I see Runaway and Mockingbird included on the one release, were just due to the scenes they were in. To me, they should've waited on getting the rights or whatever the problem was at the time. I've noticed that problem with older soundtracks, they will re-master and add stuff that should've been left off.

Just to recap what scenes the two fillers were in, during the film...

Runaway was played when the guys first entered Tony Mart's, I think it's Eddie, that's singing the chorus as they get out of the car.

Mockingbird is playing at the radio station Doc works at. When Frank comes to visit Doc, it's playing in the background. In fact Doc mentions the artists before starting the song.

I wasn't aware that a newer version of the album was released, I'll haveto check this out. The CD I own, is the same as the vinyl album... I never even noticed the track listing issue before.

I've got the same soundtrack CD that Paculliton mentioned (Scotti Brothers, 1983). Likewise my "Eddie Lives" sequel soundtrack is Scotti Brothers, 1989. To omit "Tender Years" either through accident or deliberate act is unconscionable. My God, it'd be like re-issuing "Who's Next" without "Won't Get Fooled Again"!

Six Actual......OUT!

Actually the two songs do appear in the movie - "Runaway" is heard as Eddie and the band pull into Tony Mart's just at the start of Frank's first reminiscences (I think to Maggie but I'm not sure). And "Mockingbird" is played by Doc on his radio show - I believe the James Taylor/Carly Simon version.

where can i get the re-issue with all the songs from the vinyl? Overstock.com and deepdiscount.com has the crappy version ???

Very interesting. Very sad how the record companies can manipulate that way.

I don't remember the exact year I purchased the soundtrack on CD but I know it was in one of those long cardboard boxes. I'm guessing it was late 80's.

The tracklisting on my CD is:
1. On the Dark Side
2. Tender Years
3. Runaround Sue
4. Down on My Knees
5. Hang Up My Rock And Roll Shoes
6. Wild Summer Nights
7. Boardwalk Angel
8. Betty Lou's Got a New Pair of Shoes
9. Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)
10. Season in Hell (Fire Suite)

Maybe I got lucky?
