Hated this movie

I just remember being a teenager and this movie was on HBO. Good gawd, how I hated this movie and the soundtrack!

And yet you felt the need to tell all and sundry on a board frequented by FANS of the film?

In my experience people try to AVOID things they dislike. One dislikes a film... one avoids it, avoids anything to do with it, especially fan boards.

I mean turning on the computer and making the effort to look this up on IMDB and scroll through comments and topics seems like an aweful waste of energy to spend on something you don't likein the first place.

I am afraid you are making a mistake a lot of other IMDB users make.
This isnt and never will be a "fan" board. This isnt Eddie&TheCruisersFans.com
Its IMDB and every film,tv show, video game,& Performers boards are there to discuss the merits or lack of them without bias.
You may disagree with the OP, but he wasent wrong in posting his opinion here.

I don't see what the big deal was with this movie.
I think THE IDOL MAKER, LA BAMBA, THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY are far better.

I was an extra in this movie...the concert at the college. I was disappointed in it when I saw it. I thought the acting was inconsistent and some of the dialogue kind of stiff.

The music was great, which is what makes the film. I think this film proved that Michael Pare cannot carry a film. His post-Eddie credits kind of prove it.

Yes, the sequel was really bad, almost as bad as "Slap Shot 2".

reply

I didn't know there was a "Slap Shot 2". I don't even want to see it.

From the first 20mins or so I knew this movie was going nowhere.. I would accept it if there was some actual romance or tension, but it's like a 90min musical mystery, producers arguing back and forth.. Give us some more human substance.

From the first 20mins or so I knew this movie was going nowhere..

Everybody's going nowhere slowly.
They're only fighting for the chance to be last.
There's nothing wrong with going nowhere, baby,
But we should be going nowhere fast.

Cookie if you get the reference! 

It's a waste of a great cast.. I did go into this thinking there would be some drama, romance or fights between the main characters.. But it's like political mystery it felt like. What a waste of Michael Pare, he came off in this barely, and was very dry the whole time... Streets of Fire was much better.
I guess this movie appeals to music industry hipsters.. But most people wanting a great passion filled drama, will be let down.

Cookie for you!!! 

Have you read the book, by any chance?
Obviously the different mediums mean there will be alterations from the source, but for the most part it's all there. Ending differs, of course, to try and suit a wider audience, but this is very much a film of a book rather than a film written around entertaining on its own merit.

It's also more about the music than the people as such, which is kinda what Eddie is supposed to embody. In both cases it achieves what it intended, but without aiming especially high, I suppose.

reply

Nope haven't read the book, and wasn't aware they were strictly trying to follow it, which doesn't always work well for 90mins visually.. I guess just seeing Michael Pare on the cover it looked to me like a great 80's cheesy heart-throb drama.. But it was a musical political red-tape movie with lot's of dry scenes with Berenger (also a waste of him) Well that's the way your "cookie" crumbles I guess.

reply

The basic plot is the same - It's about the music and the mystery of Eddie's legend, not the people involved. The people are, to quote the film, "Just a bunch'a guys from Jersey".

Looking at the book, this does work and the cast actually do a good job of portraying what they're supposed to... Just that it's not the Grease you were perhaps looking for. The few scenes toward the end that seem like utter *beep* are those obviously added to make it appeal to a wider audience.

The sequel is just as good, if not better, but again for different reasons and not the ones you'd expect.

reply

Well Grease was a terrible musical (I hate musicals) I'm more of a Saturday Night Fever, Streets of Fire kinda guy... I thought Pare would be more a James Dean outlaw in this, they should have had Berenger arguing with producers on the cover..

reply

Nah, it's a classic Rock N Roll tale of the angsty singer, with the twist of a murder/mystery angle.
