Was Matt Dillion ever considered?...

Never seen this but was just wondering.

Well, most people are idiots with bad taste...so there!

He couldn't have saved it.
This film is cheesy! Dreadful acting, putrid writing, and insipid music (in spite of the Springsteen attempt).
The people who enjoy this movie, are the same ones who dig the Monkees.

Dunno but he likely could have pulled it off

Not as well as Paré did, IMO. He has both the youthful naivete and the worldly wisdom that made Eddie Wilson so special.
Matt Dillon could only ever do one or the other.

This film is cheesy!

Today perhaps, but it was good back then.
Have you read the book, incidentally?

insipid music (in spite of the Springsteen attempt).

It wasn't Springsteen specifically, just the signature New Jersey rock music feel that you'll find in a lot of Jersey bands... including John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, who did the soundtrack to both films - If they "sound like Springsteen" it's only because they're both from the same place.
Bon Jovi have a lot of the signatures, as do Paul Simon, Blues Traveller, etc.

The people who enjoy this movie, are the same ones who dig the Monkees.

I'm old enough to remember them, but of sufficiently sound mind to say "*beep* you, no way, dude!!".
What you have to bear in mind is that this film is highly stylised, in the same way that people complain how 300 looks like it's a comic book... In this instance, it's a blend of elements, from 50s decor and 80s music, to tough-talking characters and rain-wet streets everywhere. It's meant to be more like a musical, rather than some deep character study... probably why they call it "A Rock N Roll Fable" at the beginning and say it's Another place, another time...
