22 years later, I think Eddie is ashamed of doing 'Delirious'

Let's face it: Delirious will never be officially released to the public.

And like a lot of Eddie Murphy fans, I too have become frustated by this seemingly assured fact. "Delirious" was Eddie in his prime, a classic and influential contribution to the world of comedy. It is a shame that the only way to view this masterpiece is to buy a poor quality bootleg DVD or spend several hours downloading a poor quality version from the internet.

In my mind the situation with "Delirious" is unprecendented. What if all of Chris Rock's stand ups specials were locked in a vault unavailable to the public. Ditto for Jerry Seinfeld or Bill Hicks or Richard Pryor or whoever...

But my point is I really don't believe that Eddie Murphy is proud of this special. If anyone is old enough to remember when this came out (or has done there research on Murphy's career) you'll remember the uproar Murphy's material caused amongst TV Critics, celebrities, the homosexual community, feminists and so on and so on. Eddie has grown and matured since '83 and I think that he is sort of ashamed of this special and since he owns the rights to the film, I don't think he'll ever let it see the light of day.

But instead of me bitching and moaning, I try to look at Murphys perspective. He has like 6 children all about 16 or younger and I think he doesn't want them to see what Dad's stage persona was like when he was 20-something.

I mean if you were Murphy would you want your kids to watch this (when they are relativly young anyway)?

So in the end, I can't fault Murphy for not releasing this special. He's doing what he feels is best for himself, his career and his family and I respect that.

But I still can't stop hoping that he'll change his mind for his older fans.

Well I read that sometime recently (past 10 years or something) that he apologised for all the jokes he made about gay people and that he was ashamed of doing those jokes.

The show was hilarious but I DO think that the gay stuff was a little too much. I mean, Mr. T, hilarious. But the way he called them "fa**ots" - not a cool term to use. He did say that he didn't care, he made of everybody, and not to alienate gay people. So I think it's fine, he just should have called them "gay".

WELL THEY PUT RAW OUT,SO I'M SURE IT'S ON ITS WAY.

Ashamed? I'm sorry, but are you a retard? Eddie being ashamed of Delirious is like Eddie being ashamed of his past, the way he got to the top, turning away from his roots! Yes he dissed gays and lots more, but he made Raw, which was very "Raw" indeed. I know he don't own the right for that one but I do know he is not ashamed of his past, especially since he's one of the best stand-ups of all time.

Okay...first of all...Eddie Murphy calling homosexuals *beep* back in the 80's was more acceptable to society than it is in todays extreme "politically correct" society we live in today. The word *beep* was used by alot more comedians than just Eddie Murphy back in the 80's.

I"m not saying it is right...I"m just saying it wasn't frowned upon AS MUCH as it is nowadays. If a comedian were to use that term nowadays, they'd have a witch hunt out for him.

But lets look at it like this...

No matter what kind of jokes or comments a comedian makes, SOMEONE will be offended by the comment...no matter what it is.

Basically, its a no win situation.

What the world needs to look at is this...its just jokes...nothing more...nothing less. Lighten up!

Uhh...well....I just bought it on DVD at Wal-Mart...it was in the 5 dollar bin with special features and *beep* too....

You do make some valid points here. In this politically corect age we now live in, if DELIRIOUS came out today, it would be deemed offensive to most of the groups you mentioned and I understand that, but it doesn't change the fact that the show is brilliant and laugh-out-loud funny. As far as his being ashamed of it today, I have never heard him say that, but I would hope not because I don't feel it is anything to be ashamed of. On the other hand, I have to admit that if I were Eddie, I don't know if I would want my kids watching it like you said either.

I'm the opposite I'd let my kids watch this but I don't like them watching horror movies.

reply

You can watch the whole movie on youtube actually.I thought Delirious was a funny stand up comedy special but its not as good as Eddie Murphy's Raw.I agree though I dont usually care about swearing in movies but I wouldnt let kids watch this until they are like 12.

Edit:This movie is coming out on DVD Feb.6 2007 so I dont think Eddie is ashamed about this movie and you are wrong about it not seeing the light of day.
