My advice

1) read the Giovanni Guareschi 's books (better then the movies)
2) See only the Fernandel -Gino Cervi movies
3) Stay away from this version , it is a very pale imitation of the original: the ambience is 1983 ( and the original is 1950:placed it 30 years further means render meanless the whole plot); the main actors have not the phisic to suit the characters ! Don Camillo and Peppone are two big men ( the bigger onesin their small town) ; Terence Hill is simple too small (Bud Spencer may fit better) and Colin Blake looks like a dwarf to fit Peppone ( the name means "big Joe" , the character is an powerfull heavyweight , just like is friend archirival).
The roles are suitable for actor like Paul Smith , Bud Spencer or Brian Dennehy; too bad that they are too aged for this.

Yeah, Terence Hill is a nice guy, but he CAN NOT BE Camillo. And just imagine an ENGLISH actor playing Peppone!
