Were Ellen Hendry and Billy McCoy having an affair?

When McCoy waves at Hendry early in the movie, she seems irritated. I took it as her non-verbally telling McCoy to cool it as her husband was around. Did anyone else get that vibe? I wonder if their affair was left on the cutting room floor as middle America might not have been keen to see an African-American man having an affair with a married caucasian woman at that time.

reply

Nope. My take was that the Hendrys were not too keen on having nuclear weapons in their backyard.

I thought this topic was a joke when I saw it, but it is actually a decent observation. I don't think that was the case, as another person replied. Just one friendly gesture met with indifference/disdain. They were living a quiet country life, save for all the military and all the weapons that surrounded them. Probably not too happy to have them around.

Probably he was just trying to be friendly. A lot of those farmers that had silos on their property didn't like it but LOVED the paycheck they got from the U.S. govt to have them there.

There was no indication that I saw of an affair. She was likely worried about being next-door to the missile, yet still trying to be friendly to the airmen, as they were just doing their jobs. At least that's how I saw it.

No affair. he was being friendly and she politely waved back. she seemed nervous living so close to a silo. I doubt she even knew him other than those casual hellos
