'You kids get into the house right now!'

There's half an hour from the time their missiles leave and the other missiles hit, so why half an hour later was that whole family that lived next door to the base, still outside?

reply

First let me point out that the Russian missiles may well have been on the way when the American missiles were launched. This is referred to in the movie as a "use them or lose them" tactic. We don't know for sure, just like the people in the movie.

Otherwise, there's a few possibilities as to why they were still outside:

1. They may have been trying to pack the car with the intention of high tailing it away from the base. Note: This was also done in Threads but not at the time of attack.

2. They were doing their shopping at the time the missiles were launched and were scrambling to get home to shelter. Note: Again this is also sort of reflected in Threads.

Hope this helps to give some insight into your question.

One point the other responder also missed as well as you is that they are not "next door" to the base.

The nearest Base was Whiteman AFB near Knob Noster, MO. Currently the home of the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers.

What they were next door to was a Single Missile Silo.

The Minuteman III Missiles where arranged in "Flights" of missiles. Each flight had 12 silos. There is one LCF (Launch Control Facility) for each flight located at the first silo of the flight.

Where I grew up in Missouri (Bates County and surrounding counties), we had Golf, Hotel, India, Kilo, Juliet, and Lima flights scattered all over the 4-5 counties around us.

John Lithgow: "That's an awful lot of bullseyes scattered halfway down the state of Misouri."

I grew up 1.8 miles from Silo J-11 (11th Silo of Juliet Flight)
We also passed K-5 (Kilo flight) everytime we drove into town (Butler,MO) situated only 200 feet off of H Highway.

Because they were probably NOT aware of the 30 minute window, and probably ignorantly were probably anticipating something on the order of an airstrike (by bombers). Just because the UL students knew about the window doesn't mean that farmers have this knowledge.

reply

Trust me... growing up in that part of Missouri. You KNEW without a doubt that it took only 30 minutes for our or theirs to reach their targets. That farmer knew it as sure as he knew the planting time of his crops.

We grew up with those warheads and the threat they represented.
This is the second post of yours in a row that I have come across where you spoke of what you know not.

reply

You are speaking as if the writers are native Missourians and have this knowledge. These are Hollywood writers, and thus we have to interpret THEIR intent. We are not watching a documentary.

reply

Trying to interpret from a writers view rather than explain from within the film itself is a cop out unless of course that is the explanation for an ACTUAL goof. In this case it is not.

It was NOT exactly 30 minutes from the time OUR missiles launched til the impact of the Russian missiles. It was something less. The family probably thought they had a few more minutes time.

That is the more logical explanation rather than "interpreting the writers intent based upon your opinion of the writer"

That smacks of an excuse to be right to avoid being wrong.

Personally, I didn't think the other family knew much about missiles or anything beyond farming.

If international tensions are spinning out of control, the risk of nuclear war is rising, and the TV interrupts with news bulletins or the emergency broadcast signal, I'd be glued to the TV.

Not these two, though. They let the kids watch the news about the end of the world as they snuck upstairs for a quickie. They paid no attention to anything.

Sleep peaceably at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on your behalf.

reply

You'd be glued if it were out of the ordinary. If the news came in day after day after day after day for decades, and if you'd lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis, you might become like the Gulf Coast region just before Hurricane Katrina 'aw, we might be able to ride this one out just like the other last times doom was predicted'. You know?

Scene in point: The Doctor and wife talking about (tada) the Cuban MIssile Crisis, being in New York at the time, under the bed.... while this time they're on top of the bed, holding hands, the cat flipping its tail, and they're very relaxed in spite of talking about war and 'what if/what do we do?'.

reply

The Emergency Broadcast tone was going off and they were talking about nuclear explosions as the parents passed the TV. I'd say this is a whole lot more than just another news report. Just about anyone knows that...except these two country bumpkins.

No, you wouldn't. I was an adult in 1983. Trust me when I say that, if the Soviets had invaded West Germany and fear of war was everywhere around, you would have paid very close attention to the news. You would have been terrified if you had heard the Emergency Broadcast System go off. The only time such a threat came even close had been in 1962, already more than 20 years in the past, and the threat then was not as great as portrayed in The Day After.

Remember, Farm Couple are sneaking upstairs for a nooner while the EBS signal is sounding AND they live next to a missile silo. That's just ridiculous.

reply

The EBS signal came on after they went upstairs. They wouldn't have heard it. Also people will deny things. Lots of people don't evacuate when hurricanes hit nor when tornadoes come do people get inside.

reply

of course mom and dad didn't hear the EBS going off. They just had one thing on their mind and that was to get upstairs for a quickie before the kids missed them.
