What did the Countess want with Clouseau again? At the end of the film I remember they assumed the Inspector stole it, calling him a "good cop gone bad."

The whole turning "bad" thing is what I don't like about it. TRAIL should've mentioned he was close to retirement, and assassination attempts made him fake his death and go into hiding. Then maybe through clues he leads Clifton to the diamond.

The Inspector still could've changed his looks, but in my opinion good cop gone bad was the wrong step.

They had to have some explanation for where Clouseau went. They couldn't say the actor playing him had died.

Interestingly, if you're at all familiar with the storyline of the aborted "Romance of the Pink Panther" (which was co-written by Sellers) that's exactly what DID happen: Clouseau crosses over at the end and joins forces with the beautiful thief he's been pursuing (and has fallen for). I wasn't crazy about this idea either but it was apparently the filmmakers' way of concluding the series. Instead, it looks like Edwards recycled the basic premise for this movie.

I think some folks are missing something here as I understand it Ted's guy thinks this man IS Roger Moore period. One question also comes to mind: can
plastic surgery also make you taller? As Roger is/was a good head taller then Peter.

Lastly am I the only one here who's thinks the scene with the "Arthur" like drunk played by Steve Franken was some kind of payback from UA to Warner Bros for Never Say Never Again?

Thats right, skohl. MGM wanted Pink Panther to keep going, and simply recast the character like it happened with James Bond. After Sellers' death, they thought it'd be a great idea to have Dudley Moore play the role and Blake Edwards direct Peter Sellers' last work. However, Edwards felt differently - he knew no one could ever succeed Sellers as Clouseau, so he devised these two films, and have Clouseau's story end while opening the door for another character - Clifton Sleigh. And while doing, he chose to adhere to Sellers' original idea for the ending... Which was, quit the force and become a partner in crime with his thief lover (The Frog in the script, Chandra in the film).

So while the film failed miserably, it still did try to lay off Clouseau but keep PinK Panther going with another character... Casue he knew there's no point of having Clouseau without having Peter Sellers to portray him. Alan Arkin and Steve Martin had to find out the hard way.
