Oscar noms for Alfre Woodard and Rip Torn!

They deserved it!

You're right. A masterful performance from both of them.

I just saw this movie. At first I thought Alfre Woodard was just another Mammy character but that scene where she's leaving then returns was the best scene in the whole thing!

Funnily enough, she was in another film 10 years later called Passion Fish in which she plays basically the EXACT SAME role. Hired help for a white woman who moves into a derelict house in the middle of nowhere, and they become friends, and her boyfriend returns etc etc etc

THEY BOTH SHOULD HAVE WON. My favorite 'Geechee' scene was her first...when she approaches Marjorie for the job. My signature has been her words for several years, now.

"If I don't suit chu, you kin cut mah thoat!"

Granted, effective and potentially reflective of the times, but anyone else could have ruined that line, and probably would have. Geechee meant business.

That's her best scene and when she runs out to Marjorie when she returned, very good and when Marjorie was shooting the pigs and Geechee was trying to stop her. How much of that was scripted and how much ad-libbed?

And her final scene, telling the story of Mary's shoes stuck in the mud, newsflash of the day. It was important to her, so we all needed to hear it.

They definitely did.
