he was in the middle of the room, nothing behind him as a means of support.. how was he able to pull that off..?

If you slide a hollow tube down your throat, you can still breathe. I saw someone do this on Hallowe'en.

By the way he was hanging you could tell the center of gravity was much lower than his neck. He was wearing some kind of makeshift harness.
