why the low rating?

this is a great film, one of the few comedys in my dvd collection. why have people given it such a low rating?

reply

... it's a bad movie.

reply

that's a bit harsh... have you seen it? or are you just assuming? if you've seen it, why do you think it's bad?

reply

I've seen it. And it's bad for many reasons. None of the key performances are very good. The Bisset character would never for a second fall in love with the Andrew McCarthy character unless she was mentally ill, which she does not seem to be. Rob Lowe gives the sort of self-consciously smarmy performance that he always gave at this stage of his career ... wallowing in his own coolness. There's not a believable moment in the film. It was (and remains) teen sexploitative crap.

Sorry.

My two cents.

She was mentally ill. You might remember that she went "to get help" at the end.

It's such a unbelievably bad movie! That's why. I'm actually surprised it's not lower than it is

I just saw it yesterday. I gave it a 4 out of 10. It really does rip off the graduate though I thought it had a great cast. The ending was very dissapointing and thought out poorly. It was interesring to see John Cusack (looks a lot like a young dustin hoffman - ironic). Also, it was funny to see a tiny role from Virginia Madsen who showed nothing but her breast with pretty much no speaking roles in the movie.

Saying this movie ripped off "The Graduate" is an insult to "The Graduate."

Other than having a young man sleeping with an older woman, the two films have nothing in common. This movie is just a piece of crap. I'm not even a fan of "The Graduate," but mentioning the two films in the same sentence is an insult to "The Graduate."

I thought this movie was great to watch even though it has been ages since I have seen it and use to watch it all the time on USA UP ALL NIGHT on the USA Network, Comedy Central, and I also believe it was shown on AMC as well.

So I had no complaints about watching this movie and loved it!

This freaking movie is the shiz.

"I'll have what she's having."

Artistically it is a 4 at best and the story is not believable. But i found it entertaining.

I doubt that anybody who made the film thought they were doing something important.

reply

it's possible i've been scraping the bottle of the barrel but i found this movie darkly funny in a way the graduate wasn't.

it's not earnest at all, which to my mind was a flaw of the hoffman film.

a bit too animal house maybe but i felt that was more to do with setting the tone as a kind of foil to the drama elements. it's smarter than you think.

it all felt very peckinpah to me; i almost called "no violence" but oh yeah, plenty of that too.

People are just fickle it seems like and do not know a good movie if it bite them in the tuckuss.

I think it's an odd mix of romantic comedy and melodrama, and I didn't find it successful in either area.

I think a few scenes were way over the top and the subplot about the stolen test answers was totally unnecessary. It's always a pleasure to see Jacqueline Bisset, Rob Lowe and Andrew McCarthy, but they've all made much better films than this one.

In my opinion, it's worth watching once and forgetting forever. 6/10 stars from me.

i agree i think it's great. the people who rated it poorly are either not jaded enough or uncomfortable with genre-crossing.

I would never describe it as a "great film," but I wouldn't call it bad. It was just kinda there. Mediocre. I never saw it when it came out, I just finally checked it out for the first time. For some reason I thought it was going to be more of a raunchy comedy than it was. More over the top. More like Porky's and Bachelor Party and less like... I dunno, Ordinary People. =P
