Why did Ralphie and Schwartz remain in their seats?

If I were Ralphie and Schwartz I would've gotten out of my seat to make it look less obvious that I was guilty of leaving Flick behind with his tongue stuck on the pole.

They were young, they were basically good kids, and they weren't particularly good liars. I suppose another reason is that they figured Flick would rat them out and tell the teacher not only that he was put up to the stunt, but by whom.

And when you think about it, I'm sure Miss Shields already knew it was them. They always hung together in a pack.

I agree both Ralphie and Schwartz weren't good liars, I thought Schwartz wasn't a very nice kid if you ask me.

I figured they knew the jig was up and too terrified to move.

Miss Shields did a great job handling the situation the way she did and I agree the guilt they're feeling should be far worse than any punishment they might receive, do you think Schwartz and Ralphie got off easily from that incident? I do.

reply

I never understood why either Ralphie or Schwartz should have worried about being in trouble. They didn't force the kid to stick his tongue on the pole in fact Schwartz warned him not to do it because it would stick.

reply

I’m still in my seat.

That was a dead giveaway to Miss Shields but she wanted them to confess, not to pounce on them as the guilty parties. She gave a lesson to the whole class.
